Well SEND ME NO FLOWERS is done.

We had a sold out audience....including some repeat viewers.  The cast was very UP and ready for a wonderful closing night.

And then.....and then....and then.....

For some reason, our genius director decided in his curtain speech to instruct the audience that they were to behave as if they were watching an old fashioned melodrama....to applaud all of our entrances....to boo and hiss if they didn't like something....and otherwise interact with us.....

Which completely confused the audience and killed all of our laughs....we played to a comparatively QUIET house.  Things that had gotten HUGE laughs the previous six performances got NO response....it was sad, frustrating, and confusing....

Add to that - the woman who QUIT the show who fancies herself the person to "get the audience going" continued to laugh her LOUD ANNOYING LONG laugh - which of course shut the audience down even more....

As I said....it was a sad ending to what should have been a triumph.

How did this jerk director ever get the job?

I remain amazed, agape, and aghast by your stories about his thoughts and processes.

Sometimes "genius" isn't and shouldn't be appreciated. There's probably some Irish toast appropriate for this situation, something about May he always be at your backside as the wind breaks.

LOL DR JOHN G....very funny.

I am not sure what his brain process is.....his main (unpaid) occupation is a PodCast about video games.....he has a job now and then, otherwise he lives at home with his parents....at age 37.

I did not know this even existed until recently.  I played it for the first time this morning and really liked it.  I may have to read Victor Hugo's novel now.

I have avoided that particular Disney-fied movie since they made the Hunchback a lovable little imp....but maybe it has its moments.

The musical version differs from the animated cartoon, which I avoided, and follows the novel: Esmerelda dies and there is no happy ending.  This recording is essentially the Papermill cast recording.

Based on my once-years-ago watching of the Disney film on DVD, I remember I really liked a lot of the music. But I haven't followed up on either that or the novel at all. Must do.

I've been listening to Menotti's short opera The Telephone (23 minutes).  It continues to make me laugh, from Lucy's aria "Hello? Hello! Oh Margaret, it's you" to the beautiful finale.

Jrand - There's something about the premise of SEND ME NO FLOWERS that could possibly suggest a heavy drama, I guess.  Maybe he didn't realize it was a comedy until you were in rehearsals?  :)

Annabelle, after nearly two years, has become a veteran elevator rider.  As soon as she leave the apartment, she goes directly to the elevator for her ride to the first floor, and when she's bored with exploring, she leaves me sitting on the lobby steps to go back to the elevator to wait for me.

Sweet.

I have had cats that went for walks with me.

Also for BK:  I don’t recall ever hearing about this Brent’s Deli in Northridge. Is this a new find, or am I just not remembering?

If I ate there before we left So. California I don't recall it by name.  In fact it wasn't until many years later that people began talking about it.

A history of Brent's Deli from their website. https://www.brentsdeli.com/aboutus/

I've posted before that Skip had written the love ballad for Quasimodo in the Disney sequel, and Skip has decided not to listen to the foreign language versions of this ballad, although he has listened to some of the foreign versions of the funny number he wrote for the gargoyles Victor, Hugo and Laverne.  (He wrote 3 of the 5 songs.)

The singing is always more technically sung than Tom Hulce's in English, but in some languages it's been singerly, if that's a word. Often, it seems there's different speaking Quasi and singing Quasi.  This Italian one seems like a good balance between singer and the character.

There is a museum called The Cradle of  Aviation locally which celebrates air flight from its earliest experimental stages through the space age with a special emphasis on the part Long Island played in the process
