T.O.D.

Working for myself as a publicist; also working for Roger Corman as a screenwriter/director.

Why?

Because the only "pressure" was from me. I could work at my own speed; own hours; own way, just so I "delivered the goods" successfully and on schedule.

Last night I tried 2 Advil PM.  I slept soundly for about 2.5 hours, then woke up and could not get back to sleep.  I was quire restless because i could not find a comfortable position because of the pains in my hip and legs.  I dozed on and off until 5:00, at which time Stella started biting my toes.  6:30 could not come soon enough.

I got up, fed the cats, but neither Stella nor Annabelle would eat.  I said to hell with it and went back to bed.

Best job: Miami University Library, 1970-71, the year after I finished my M.A.  One of the best jobs with the best boss I ever worked for, Helen Ball.

Worst job: Office Outfitters, 1973-77, driving a delivery truck and hating every other minute of it.  The manager, Jim Ashcraft, was a good boss, but the owner was a complete ass.

Today is a ME day.....everyone else has to learn lines for PICNIC, but the director doesn't...although I seem to know most of them anyway.

Tomorrow is the first day OFF book, although several folks have been trying for a few days now.

I saw some of the lighting yesterday which looked okay....and the costumes are nice....so we are moving forward.

I have loved aspects of most jobs I’ve had. And then I didn’t. I was glad to lose the job at the newspaper here in San Antonio because I had really stopped loving it.

I think my most favorite job was working as a seasonal worker at Barnes and Noble because I was in a bookstore.

I liked working at Barnes & Noble, too.  Our manager Patty was one of the best bosses I worked for.

Annabelle and I have not patrolled yet.  I don't think we will.  After cleaning the litter, I was in so much pain from the stretching and lifting that I needed a lie down, and of course I had to make the bed first.

I went to sleep last night around 11:30 & was shocked when I opened my eyes to find it was 5:55.

Correction. Keith has informed me I got up at 5:00, not almost 6:00.  No wonder I am still very tired.

Started the day by marking up my "Mermaid" book.

Next I have to record the Kick Line from "Cabaret" for a rehearsal tomorrow night.

And then I believe I can, and shall, relax for the rest of the livelong day.

I honestly don't recall having a job I actively disliked. There were a few periods in which I had to report to someone I didn't prefer to report to, but those worked out okay in the end.

I'd guess the very best job was the last one which had me working at home and reporting to headquarters in Dallas. Carrollton, to be exact. The owners of the company were exceptional people, and I couldn't have asked for a nicer arrangement. So, throughout my thirty-year history with the same basic company that changed hands a few times, I can name that one as my favorite.

TOD:
It's interesting that Bruce is asking this question today because I just got a new job offer on Wednesday! I've been looking to change departments where I work, and I've been applying and interviewing for the past 10 months. The job I have now started out as probably the best job I've ever had, but it's changed in the past five years and now I'm miserable. I think this new job will be a much better fit for me. I'm a Business Systems Analyst, which I recognize tells you nothing about what I do. Suffice it to say, "it's complicated".

May I just say that this is a damned chilly Labor Day?

Of course you never know what you're going to get on one of these summer holiday weekends, and I have known other gray and cold ones. The surprise one was in Chicago, following a hot summer, when a bunch of us had an enjoyable but chilly cookout and retreated to the indoors for the rest of the afternoon.

We had no plans here today. Kristi and Nathan are off to see some movie, and I'm perfectly happy staying indoors and savoring my last real day off for a while.

I stepped out to run the errands I've been postponing since Saturday.  I walked to Broadway in a light rain, realized I had forgotten the mail I wanted to post, and thought, I'll run my errands tomorrow on my way to the doctor.
