Last night's show was both great and hellish.

We had a substitute drummer which was scaring the bejesus out of me throughout the the evening. I know him and he's basically good and plays lots of shows, but he'd only ever played Cabaret once some years ago, and that, too, was as a sub. I was only able to meet with him an hour before, and we went over every cue. He did pretty well for the most part, but it turned out that he didn't have a grip on what the style of the drum solos should be. He'll be back once more, next Saturday, and the regular drummer (who's wonderful) is going to have to help on that.

Other weird things happened, including a keyboard amp volume level mishap that happened just before the start of the song "Cabaret" when I found I had about half my volume. Couldn't do a damned thing about it till after the song when I found the problem and fixed it. The band carried on and the song completed successfully, don't ask me how.

Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.  Time for a week off.

I assume you are watching the pitiful film version with Gordon Macrae?

I am home from the movie.  I left the theatre with a huge smile on my face and a big tear in my eye.

The first time I watched the entire series from beginning to end, I went back to Season One and watched the whole thing all over again.  I felt the same way about the movie.  I want to see it again and soon.

If you liked the series, you'll love the film.  It takes the simple "the King of England is coming for dinner" and wrings everything out of it that it can: clothing issues, royal staff vs Downton staff and the royal staff are impossibly superior and snobby, broken family relationships, romantic entanglements old and new.  Would Tom Bransom's politics include assassination? Will he ever find another great love?  Will Barrow ever find romance?  Why are tchochkes vanishing from the Abbey's rooms?  Will Daisy commit to marrying Andrew?  Will Molesley ever stop making a fool of himself?

Yes. And it was a dreadful case of what could have been.

One of the extras on the disc, though, is the Fritz Lang film of Liliom, which I haven't seen in years. I don't know that I will watch all of it today, but it's nice to know that it's there. Charles Boyer is the main character.

Thanks for the update of Downton. Maybe I'll get to see it when I get back.

I made a comment several weeks ago about the series showing signs of bigger budgets once it was successful, and the film shows the same.  I never felt for a moment, though, that I was seeing a TV episode on a film budget.  It's a film that wraps up the series even better than the last episode of Season Six did. I loved the new music for a wonderful opening sequence leading to the first shot of the Abbey and the familiar theme.

It was such a wrong idea to begin in heaven, and it's cast oddly.  I like MacRae, Audrey Christie, Robert Rounseville, and Cameron Mitchell, but I detest the actress playing Carrie and I think Shirley Jones is much better as Laurie in Oklahoma!

Barbara Ruick was Carrie. She was better as an evil stepsister in the Leslie Warren Cinderella.

When I watched the CAROUSEL film for my first time in many years, I was actually shocked to see that opening scene. I’d totally forgotten about it.

What a warm day! Some AC will have to be called into service this evening.

I took care of the things that absolutely needed to be done today, ran a couple of errands, got back home and fed the monsters, and I am now sitting on the deck eating chips and salsa and sipping a dirty Tanqueray martini (not my preference, it’s what was in the house)... and I don’t care who knows it.

We’re in the mid to high 80s today and tomorrow. It’s a delightful, if all too brief, return to summer temps. I’m hoping for another one of these when it comes time for some Indian Native American Summer.

From the mediocre to the ridiculous. I'm now listening to the new Oklahoma! recording, which came in to the library. I'm glad I didn't pay for this. I like the hillbilly orchestrations, but the singing is definitely not my cuppa.

I made a Keto-friendly chocolate pie yesterday. I meant to take last night to dancing. I didn't read the recipe all the way through and it needed to sit six hours. It was liquid yesterday. It looks great today. Taking it to dinner with friends.

I have a friend who LOVES the new recording.  I've only heard a few tracks and liked them, but don't love the more modern interpretations.  But I do love Mary Testa!

A friend went on that and got sick.  You need a working gallbladder to digest the diet.

Thanks to DR Elmore for the DOWNTON report. Looking forward to seeing it. Like Elmore, I will watch the entire series again first.

That would mean high fat, but low sugar, yes? Have you made one before? Is it tasty?
