Here is some military humor: I went to Best Buy and they did not have either QUEEN BEE or MILDRED PIERCE on DVD!

Their computer said that they had 3 copies of MATANGO FUNGUS OF TERROR, yet I couldn't find them. The clerk phoned the guy in the stock room (at my insistence) and the guy in the stock room insisted he did not have any copies of that dvd back there. So I looked on the shelf some more...the clerk told me it would be in the action section (even though it is a Japanese science fiction movie). Still couldn't find the DVDs. Clerk looked too and then said they must have sold them all. Out comes the guy from the stock room pushing a cart of DVDs. He grabs some off of the cart and puts them on the shelf. I walk up to him and ask him if he has the movie I am looking for. He says he does not and he had just told the clerk that he didn't have it. I look at the shelf that he had just put some dvds on. Guess what he just put on the shelf. 3 copies of MATANGO which he had just said he didn't have. I grabbed a copie, showed it to him, said my thank you's, and then went and paid for it.

That was neither humorous nor related to the military, but it was quite trivial.

MBarnum, having had similar experiences I did laugh sarcastically at you story. I bet the stock person didn’t even apologize (or you wouldn’t be so grumpy). At least if he had been embarrassed and said something about his brain being elsewhere but chances are he didn’t care.

I was reading a letter to Dear Abby where a puppy may have permanent kidney damage from eating a bowl of grapes. The letter also warns of the dangers of dogs eating raisins, onions and garlic. Surprisingly there is no mention of chocolate. Has anyone heard these foods are dangerous? I have read to add garlic powder to a dogs food to increase appetite.

I've heard that it's deadly for cats to eat onions.

And I know just a small of amount of chocolate can be dangerous for dogs. The late, lamented Cully once got into a box of liquer-filled chocolates that we had received for a Christmas present and had been wrapped, sitting under the tree, us unaware of the contents. But Cully's sniffer detected them and he tore into them, eating something like thirty out of a box of 42. He immediately was rushed to the doctor to have his stomach pumped. The doctor said he had a chocolate river cascading out of his mouth.

Julieanne used to feed Cully grapes occasionally with no apparent ill effects. But Cully would eat anything. We nicknamed him Hoover, because he hoover up everything he found on the floor.

Eating raisins can be dangerous for anyone, animal or human. Yecch!

Yeah, to a point. Too bad the whole "Don't Ask Don't Tell" legislation was pushed through because of the homophobia of Senator Sam Nunn (D-GA). Nunn was a right-wing Democrat, life-long. People forget that little detail.

(It was also a Democratic controlled Congress that passed "Don't Ask Don't Tell." And it was signed into law by our most recent Democrat President.)

I have seen the Gap commercial with Sarah Jessica Parker... I actually kind of like it.

Of course, I do have to wonder how many of "today's kids" actually get the film/theatrical reference. They probably think Rodgers & Hammerstein is some new producer/rap/groove duo.

I'm back at Jou Jou Cafe. I just had a pretty deelish Chicken, Ricotta and Tomata Crepe, and I'm sipping on a pretty good cup o' Joe. Or would that be "cup of Jou"?

...Interesting "conversation" going on behind me right now. Very religious in nature. A customer trying to preach/teach to the clerk. However, I have to say, both parties seem to be holding their own.

Good day today. I'm glad I got all that busy stuff done earlier this afternoon. After leaving the apartment, I headed back down to the Chelsea Market to pick up some brownies at FatWitch to send back to Steve in Richmond. Then it was up to Old Navy by Penn Station/MSG to buy some black socks. Then up to Patelson's by Carnegie Hall to buy some music. There was a whole box of used classical vocal music at the front of the store. I made a cursory browse of the contents - very tempting. Some true rarities, and most of them were priced at $1.00 a sheet (music). Alas, I resisted. To go through the whole box would have taken a good chunk of time - which I didn't have - and who knows how much money I would have ended up spending. While in Patelson's I did end up helping a new Master's student at Manhattan School of Music track down some music she was looking for. A) If she's pursuing her M.M., she should really be able to identify songs and aria by more than just their melodic hook, or which recording she has (she had no titles, and garbled the composers' names). B) I have no idea how some of those clerks at Patelson's get their jobs. Their lack of basic musical repertoire knowledge is staggering at times.

I walked down to Ollie's to get some dinner. A nice, spicy beef noodle soup. Lots of star anise - love that flavor. -And my third or fourth time at Ollie's in the past week or so. What can I say? It's good. It's convenient. It's fast. And it's pretty reasonable price-wise too.

Then it was over to Theatre Row to the Clurman for tech rehearsal.

So do I, DR Jose. I still think Sarah Jessica Parker should be cast in a revival of Funny Girl.

I have had a l-o-n-g day, starting with an early meeting, pre-travel errands, and a full work day, 12-9. One of the purposeless punks who hangs out at the library complained about me talking too loud in front of the Grants Information Center. My boss and his boss explained that I was doing my job. I want to wear a button that says, "I'm doing my job, why don't you get one?"

It occurred to me today that this weekend's trip will be my 10th to NYC - how nice to share it with a whole bunch of new friends!

If DR PennyO ever produces/directs any other show in the future - hers or someone else's - be sure to count me in! I like how she rehearses - and doesn't rehearses. We concentrated on what needed fixing, and just let the stuff that's been working continue to work.

We started around 6:00, and we were done around 9:00. We were scheduled to go to 10:30.

Always nice to have an early night.

And the Clurman really is a nice space. I haven't been in the Theatre Row complex since they remodeled, and I like the remodeling.

We happen to be in the same complex that the starry-cast revival of Hurlyburly is playing in, so there's been a couple of Ethan Hawke and Parker Posey groupies hanging around. Can you say spillover business?
