I can't be understanding this right :  They said for Public Advocate in tpday;s election, New York City, there's the Democratic incumbent and the republican who9 has stated that his goal is to eliminate the job of public advocate. ???

I think we get mail even though it's election day....at least that's what the USPS website says.

Maybe DR JEANNE will get her water.

Just saw a video of a hideous production of The Man Who Came To Dinner where they had the role of Beverly Carleton was played by a woman. Did they not know that Beverley was a man?

Tuesday morning greetings!  I'm home ALL DAY today and tomorrow, making caramel corn both days to contribute to the AAUW Holiday Bazaar.  First batch last night went well, but I'm glad to get an earlier start today.

TOD - I knew the they-thing was here to stay when I heard it used by a Miami University professor of English.

The one that made me shake my head was when I was given the opportunity to have my preferred pronouns listed on my name badge for the American Library Association annual conference.

My leg was aching so much I came home rather than vote.  I'll step out this afternoon and do it.

TOD

I have what is probably only the vaguest idea of the whole NEW "they" thing. Hell, we've all used "they" informally for years in a general (non-gender-related) sense. It's apparently very specific now in many instances and I wouldn't pretend to grasp the ins and outs of it. But it's not only the "they" stuff. There are other, truly NEW made up pronouns that I've seen reference to, and at this point I'm ignorant as to their meanings and uses.

I'm not against anyone being, or becoming, the person they want or need to be. But I think my own and others' initial negative reactions to the sudden proliferation of new or repurposed pronouns is the apparent REQUIREMENT that the entire world kowtow to the demands of the few, when what most of us would be happy to do is live and let live, and probably make a few mistakes along the way, but to be excused for them and not be turned on in an over-reactive or militant way because of them. It seems that it's suddenly supposed to be "all about them", and I'm amazed at the extent to which our institutions are rushing in to be counted in almost the, um, "me too" sense.

If I may ask, DR Ginny, how did you respond? Or more to the point, do you have any sense of how the majority of attendees responded? And was the question taken seriously for the most part? Ridiculed for the most part? All or none of the above?

Was the role play by a woman...as a woman? ???

I was shocked to find out how many women get upset over formal invitations addressed to Mr. & Mrs. & their name is not included.  I don't care & actually think in an old fashioned way it is kind of charming.  In a modern world I understand why it bothers some people but not to the extent people are fuming over it.

I know a couple of people who prefer to be referred to as "they."  I am very happy to accommodate.  However, I have to know about it first.  I think it's unreasonable for people who prefer to known as "they" to be upset when someone who doesn't know their preference makes the mistake and refers to them as "he" or "she."  How can I know if I've never met them, and no one else has told me??

That kinda irks me. ::)

One of the moderators today works for a clothing rental company called Armoire. Clothing rental. You rent two outfits a month. Odd. IMO.

I wouldn't know to call anyone "They" ;D

I think it is silly to expect people to know all the new rules today and to just go with the flow.

Regarding being called "They" -  isn't there an old joke about a scale saying "One at a time, please.'

In the never thought it would happen in a zillion years department - I'm nominated for an Ovation Award for best score for A Carol Christmas.  First time ever.  The Ovations are easy to game, as a simple look at the theaters and people who are nominated every year will tell you.  There aren't a lot of entries in book and score, maybe that's why we got in, but it's nice to finally have a nomination from a group I was resigned to thinking would never do so.

It was optional, DR ChasSmith, so I just did not respond.  I noticed a few badges with pronouns on them, but ALA is a pretty tolerant organization and I don't think there would be any (open) ridicule.

Congrats, BK!  The score is certainly deserving of awards (or at least the nominations)! :D
