I have what is probably only the vaguest idea of the whole NEW "they" thing. Hell, we've all used "they" informally for years in a general (non-gender-related) sense. It's apparently very specific now in many instances and I wouldn't pretend to grasp the ins and outs of it. But it's not only the "they" stuff. There are other, truly NEW made up pronouns that I've seen reference to, and at this point I'm ignorant as to their meanings and uses.
I'm not against anyone being, or becoming, the person they want or need to be. But I think my own and others' initial negative reactions to the sudden proliferation of new or repurposed pronouns is the apparent REQUIREMENT that the entire world kowtow to the demands of the few, when what most of us would be happy to do is live and let live, and probably make a few mistakes along the way, but to be excused for them and not be turned on in an over-reactive or militant way because of them. It seems that it's suddenly supposed to be "all about them", and I'm amazed at the extent to which our institutions are rushing in to be counted in almost the, um, "me too" sense.
