TOD, Part the Second:

I haven't actually read all that many books about the making of films or Hollywood itself. I do have quite a few others on my shelves, as yet unread, that are supposed to be among the best. But at least I've read these at some point and feel great affection for them, even if in some cases their authority has been superseded (superseded?) in recent years.

Hitchcock/Truffaut
The Dark Side of Genius: The Life of Alfred Hitchcock (Donald Spoto)
The Citizen Kane Book (Kael, Mankiewicz & Welles)
Lawrence of Arabia (Morris & Raskin)
A Star is Born (Ronald Haver)
A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrman (Steven C. Smith)
The Haunted Screen (re silent films, by Lotte H. Eisner)

TOD Part 2

I've only read one book that I can think of about a film from that time:
Nashville Chronicles: The Making of Robert Altman's Masterpiece by Jan Stuart.

Damn it to HELL, DR Elmore. That does it. That was the last straw.
I'm taking out my Criterion Blu-ray of Nashville, and I will finally ..... FINALLY ..... watch it!  :)

I've read those.  Steven Smith is a fan of mine and a FB friend.  He has a new book about Max Steiner coming out soon.

I'll add:
The Making of The Wizard of Oz by Aljean Harmetz
Memo from David O. Selznick : The Creation of "Gone with the Wind" and Other Motion Picture Classics by Rudy Behlmer
The world of entertainment!: Hollywood's greatest musicals by Hugh Fordin (I knew Fordin; not fond of him)

Ronee Blakely and Barbara Harris rule!

That ensemble cast is amazing.

That's good to hear, both about Steven Smith and his upcoming Max Steiner book.

I have two books on The Wizard of Oz, but not that one. I know one is called The Wizardry of Oz.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that movie....in fact the more I think of it I’m sure I never saw it... I certainly don’t have a copy.  I wonder if it’s on Netflix or Amazon Prime

That whole movie is just above and beyond. It shows an America in a way no other movie has captured. It is up there with Best Years of Our Lives in that.

It's such a rich film with such interesting and eccentric characters: Keenan Wynn, Shelly Duvall, Barbara Baxley, Henry Gibson, and who is the actor playing Barbara Harris' husband?  Gwen Welles has got to have one of the most awkward and humiliating scenes in film. Ronee Blakely reminds me so much of my mother's sister Lois that I have a hard time getting through the film.

Snowing heavily, and no sign of it moving into rain for at least a couple of hours.

I almost watched NASHVILLE again last night.....maybe tonight....I will be interested in reading DR CHAS SMITH's review.

Of course I play the soundtrack often....

I will add all of DR ELMORE's books to my list....
