NEWS ON ANGEL JIM:

He called us Tuesday night, most distressed. It seems his Parole Hearing lasted all of five minutes, and the head of it was very curt, not letting him speak, cutting him off every time he started to answer a question. We are trying to put the best possible spin on all this--the teacher who gives you a toungue-lashing and then relents and gives you a B. Whatever.

But no news yet on the outcome, and we may not know till Monday. The parole board is getting a lot of new cases now because of the relaxation of New York's notoriously draconian Rockefeller Laws. Perhaps it was indigestion.

I heard on News 12 last night (the Lonng Island news channel for you non Long Island DR's) that a Bay Shore tax accountant is facing 108 years in prison for the creative accounting that he used on tax returns and of course all the clients are going to be liable for past due taxes and fines etc, which enas in the long run the government is going to get its money plus more AND this man will spend the rest of his life in prison MEANWHILE we are putting people who rape children and people who murder shopowners a during robberies back on the street after a couple of years in prison

I got one of my cargo covers yesterday dear JRand. Funnily enough , this is the last one I won and I got it for only 99 cents plus postage, the postage was only about $8 and change so I paid less than $10 for this elusive item, which is has been installed and is already in use in my car. Meanwhile, the first one I purchased (which turned out not to fit) cost me around $40 all told and the other one I won on ebay which cost around $32 with shipping, still has not arrived

I guess I really can't complain because all together I still spent waaaaaay less than the $250 the dealer wanted to replace the cargo cover

(hmmmm, maybe I can sell him my two spares for $50 a piece........)

btw, not to belabor the subject of Terri Schiavo, did anyone notice (as major news outlets failed to mention) that the man who organized the "children's protest"--resulting in a photo-op of arrested children, was a registered sex offender, guilty of two rapes, and the Shindler's grand-standing "spokesman" for the "culture of life", family values, etc. had been kicked out of his church for "inappropriate relations" with several female members of the congregation?

I had not heard this but when the Vixter heard on the news abouthe parents that brought their children down to the protest and encouraged them to break through police lines and allowed them be arrested she was really angry. She said 'Mama, if you ever did that to me. I would call social services and tell them to take me away! Do those kids know that now they may never get to be what they want to when they grow up because they 'll have police records?!! What if they want to be FBI guy or a CSI or something and they'll say nope you can't do it because you were arrested when you were a little kid!!"

(I was going to explain about sealed youth records and such until it suddenly occurred to me that she had the proper attitude to keep herself out of trouble with the law in her rapidly approaching teenage years!! So I shut up!!

DR Laura asked how my roast beef turned out.

Okay.

I think I didn't realize that there is a difference between a pot roast (cooking longer at a low temp & a roast beef). I thought they were the same!

Anyhow I cooked it for 2 hours. First hour at 300F and second hour at around 250F. I think if I did it again (i was trying for a roast beef), I would probably try it at 350F for an hour.

But thanks to everyone for their help! HHW is a great learning tool!

The Hong Kong Musicals sound like a lot of fun. And I have put HIGH AND LOW on my list to buy when I have some money. Yes, movies like THE PROFESSSIONALS have disappeared from the big screen, but luckily we have them back on the home screen!

DVD: Follow That Dream with Mr Elvis Presley, and discussed here a few weeks ago.

VHS: More DARK SHADOWS, the experiments continue, and Burke Devlin's plane has gone down in the Amazon jungle

CD: Party 2001! Macarena so that I can teach it tomorrow to a couple of actors in a play called ROUNDING THIRD.

Very excited to hear about the production of BUS STOP. Mr Inge is probably my favorite playwright. The play has a ghost over it, one that I think is difficult to get past, but hopefully a new LA production will do so.

DR JRand, have you read any of the unsuccessful plays that Inge wrote after DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS. I knew he had a series of flops in the 1960s, but I've never read (nor seen performed) any of them.

Reading that biography of Inge was a very sad read. The man, for all his success, never seems to have been very happy.

Returning after much errancy and truancy:

CD: A copy of Veronica Nunn's "American Lullaby," burned for me by the subway booth clerk at the station near my home.

As a native New Yorker, I naturally have a "smile and wave" relationship with a bunch of strangers who I see on a daily basis. Anyhow, this clerk's been on my daily "good morning" list probably for a year or more. One day, I walk by, and stop dead in my tracks, hearing a jazzy rendition of "Not While I'm Around" emanating from the booth. Seeing my reaction, the clerk showed me the CD, and we struck up a quick conversation. She wasn't at all familiar with Sweeney Todd, so I loaned her my copy of the original cast (yes, I warned her that the two Sweeney songs that Nunn sings [she also sings "Green Finch and Linnet Bird"] are not quite representative of the score).

No DVD/VHS stuff for the past few weeks: work, school, and taxes have been kinda keeping us busy... $:-\$

In my VCR: tapes to tape tonight's "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" and "Law and Order: Trial By Jury" and "20/20" with Rosie O'Donnell (she was supposed to be on last week, but I guess her segment got bumped when the Pope died). I'm going to my parents' house for dinner, but I'm hoping to be home in time to watch "L&O" so that I only have to tape two of these shows. These are all at 10:00 p.m.! I hate that. And if "Battlestar Galactica" wasn't a repeat, that would be on the list, as well!

In my DVD player: I rented "The Forgotten" with Julianne Moore and Gary Sinise. I almost bought a used copy for only $10 (at the video store where I rented this copy), but I should watch it once, just in case I hate the movie.

After that will be disc one of season one of "Penn and Teller's Bullsh*t" that I got from Netflix! I'll finally get to see what BK did on that show. The other two discss are on their way.

In my CD player: Donald Feltham's interview with BK! After that will be BK's appearance on "2 on the Dial," the interview he gave in December on some other radio station.
