And to answer an earlier question, at this point I have no idea if there will be a common theme between the short stories.  I tend to think not, but you never know about these things - certainly it won't be conscious, but I will say there is a slight fantasy element to the two stories I've done.  Not major, but ever so slight.  But, if you'd asked me when I began the Kritzer saga if the theme of all three books would turn out to be the same thing, I wouldn't have had a clew that the common theme between them is loss.

I have never heard that "Being in Love" was added to THE MUSIC MAN to garner an Oscar nomination. Only half the song is new anyway.

And it didn't happen that new songs added to old Broadway scores got nominations until the new title song in FUNNY GIRL got nominated. Had it ever happened prior to 1968?

New songs integrated into the movie versions of Broadway shows that garnered Oscar nominations:

1935 -- "Lovely to Look At" from "Roberta"
1937 -- "Whispers in the Dark" from "Artists and Models"
1941 -- "The Last Time I Saw Paris" from "Lady Be Good"
1943 -- "Happiness is a Thing Called Joe" from "Cabin in the Sky"
1947 -- "Pass That Peace Pipe" from "Good News"

DtM - Marilyn has a couple of good moments, but Ginger is just too much!  And it's one of my least favorite Cary Grant movies - almost a parody of himself.

I think it's FUN!  :-*

We first saw DUNDEE on a double bill - and it was the second feature.  We just hung around for a bit to see what it was like - but we were hooked in the first five minutes.  Always seemed a bit chopped up - but I didn't know anything about cutting a movie in 1965.

What were the cuts, and were they made for time or content?

DUNDEE was taken away from Peckinpah in post and editing and he claimed ruined.  He also claimed it would have been his best film.  The studio actually tried to either shut the movie down or take Peckinpah off it during shooting, except that Charlton Heston offered to give back his salary to keep it going with Peckinpah.  The studio took him up on the offer.

Peckinpah is notorious for saying all his films were ruined in one way or another - that was his thing.  With Ride the High Country he claimed he wasn't allowed to edit it, and also that the score was terrible.  Well, it's well-edited and I'm rather fond of the score, and the film is one of his best.  He originally told Jerry Fielding that he thought his score to The Wild Bunch had ruined the film.  He later recanted, when he realized how stupid he was being.  According to Nick, even with the put back scenes, even with the new score, Major Dundee is still problematic.  It's better, but that doesn't suddenly make it a great film.
