Today is National Jelly Bean Day.

Kismet! A show that means much to WFO and myself.  Right age - right time. Of course I tend to write Guesticulate.

My dinner invitation with friends for tonight came through, so all I've had today was some chocolate ice cream this afternoon. Delicious, but I will really be ready for some REAL food tonight.

Looks like I won't get much watched the rest of today, but I'll make up for it tomorrow with some DVD marathons. A friend loaned me the comedy remake of THE STEPFORD WIVES so that goes on the pile, too. I know it got god-awful reviews, but at least I'll get to see what others have been talking about.

It didn't get cold or rainy like they predicted either. Consequently, I'm wearing shorts tonight for the first time this season.

Kismet was my first Broadway show on my first trip to NYC from Tulsa at the age of 10.  I spent the next month boring all the Okies with detailed descriptions.

And we did fly, the genie and I
We did sail, did sail....

Is this a tale? This is a tale!
Are you impressed? We are impressed!

You see, you see, you seeeeee

For the facile finger
Listeners will linger
They will be impressed if you gest...
Applaud with zest if you gest...
If it's a question of a story, gory, Sinbad, Djinn bad, bottle, smoke, genie, arms, fly, high, sky..
I state, reiterate, gesticulate
With your hands!

And with that, I'm leaving work to see Joe's younger sister who is here for three days from Cali-for-ni-ay

Yeah, it did get panned, but the ladies' book discussion parody was worth sitting through the movie.  Also, the product placement of Ohio-made Longaberger baskets.

I was watching a snatch of Rodzinski's beloved Ritz Bros. in Straight, Show, and Place...a scene where a rather young and almost glamourous Ethel Merman is singing a zippy little number to Richard Arlen.  Mostly.you saw the back of Arlen's head. but occasionally they gave you a profile shot.  I was fascinated by the large gap in his back teeth on the right side.

I didn't see the original staging of KISMET, but I did see the revival at the Music Theater of Lincoln Center with Alfred Drake recreating his original role, and it was one of the most lavish spectacles I've ever seen on the stage. I've always liked the show, but I'll never forget that first encounter with it at the N.Y. State Theater.

KISMET - I only just became a fan of the movie and score in the last few months.  Lovely!  My favorite part of the movie is the parade of all the animals and items.

Yea photos!  Thanks, MR BK!

DR CP I watched a bit of some of the Ritz Brothers.  I can't get into them....I just don't get it.

DR MB - ah the lovely Meena....what a tragic and sad life story....but such a beautiful and heart-tugging actress!  I can hardly wait for the AIR HOSTESS report!

Tonight on CMT is POPULARITY CONTEST - very funny reality type show.

AND on TCM Sunday at Noon EST - my favorite Lana Turner all-stops-out performance as MADAME X!!!  Featuring Constance Bennett newly returned from Switzerland with her fresh facelift - shortly before she gave herself a party and dropped dead.

A quote from Pauline Kael:  "Onto the screen came Constance Bennett. John Forsythe said, "Hello, Mother," and there were gasps in the audience.....Lana Turner is NOT Madame X - she is Brand X , a commodity to be bought and sold...."

I remember Kael's caustic review which was cruel to the point of being unfair. Turner was no Hepburn or Davis, but she had her fans and her following, millions of whom enjoyed those Ross Hunter soap operas she made.
