BK, I hope you got far enough into the H&G video to hear some of Anna Russell's Witch. I realized that I have the mp3 file for the film soundtrack that was released by RCA in the 1950s.  It's 57 minutes long, so at least 15 minutes of the film were cut for the recording, but it catches the score well.

Interesting image there, because RCA’s short lived “SelectaVision” video disc was one of the most reviled formats ever. I wonder if that was the same poor transfer we’re looking at today.

That soundtrack record was on the RCA Camden label. Maybe I can find a good clean copy.

This was not the recording I had, but I could not find on Google the cover of my Camden release.  It featured that wonderfully designed gingerbread house.

Wow, that’s quite a difference! But what label is it? That’s not an RCA Camden. What is “X”? Is that an LP or a smaller kids’ record?

That’s a great old style soundtrack jacket, no question.

TOD:

Beauty and the Beast
I was about seven when I saw the Cocteau film version, maybe my first foreign film. It was a game changer in terms of visuals. The wall of arms holding candelabras was amazing to my young eyes. Love the story and the animated version, but a good French remake in color.

Cinderella:
So many versions, but my favorites are the Rodgers and Hammerstein with Julie Andrews and Leslie Ann Warren as well as Slipper and the Rose. I really like BK’s compilation CD.

Hansel and Gretel
Not the action flicks, but the Humperdinck opera, the Barbara Cook TV version (I know it only from the score)

Pinocchio
The original story, the Disney, a live production I saw with an incredible series of puppets. Not the Stephen Schwartz musical.

His nightmare is about to begin.

Monday afternoon greetings!  I slept late and then spent what was left of the morning finishing The Overdue Life of Amy Byler, a rom-com novel recommended by my friend Sharon.  It was just what I needed.

It must have been associated with RCA. Or did Michael Myerberg produce it himself?

Lounging around with a good book sounds like just the thing.

I hope it's not one of these current post-Freudian Eurotrash productions in modern dress, which has less to do with Humperdinck and more to do with the director's psychosexual fantasies.

Tom, I agree with George.  Did you let Safeway know what happened?  Especially bad was leaving it spread out on your front porch.

Oh the mind reels. This could be fun. All sorts of sexual motifs in the gingerbread house. The angels could be nude except for their wings. The stepmother could be a slut and the witch a dominatrix. Or you could make Hansel and Gretel immigrants while the witch is a Karen.

This afternoon, while doing a fairly considerable kitchen cleanup, I cranked up the Big Speakers and listened to the Met telecast sans video straight through. I didn't stop the cleaning, but I would just stop and shake my head at what I'm still calling some of the most beautiful music I've heard.

Which leads me to a digression, soon to follow...
