DR Elmore, you mentioned A Carnival in Flanders — a fortuitous reminder, because I bought that on your recommendation but haven’t watched it. It has been taken off the shelf and placed on the watch pile.

I did finish 8 1/2 last night. And man, that’s a tough one. You have to be able to follow it to get it. I mean, I “get” it, but the dialogue is fast and furious and you miss a lot when a line or three go by that you were barely able to read.

I think the answer, short of dropping everything and becoming fluent in Italian, is simply to sit closely and slog through it a couple more times, freeze framing and rewinding, until I really have the gist of each exchange. Eventually, I should be able to just watch and enjoy. But I’m going to have to earn it.

It's a wonderful comedy, but the subtitles are a mess. I wish Criterion would rescue it.

DR Jane no I wasn't wearing sunglasses. I mostly only wear my glasses to drive. I don't wear them outside. It was the first day that it was so cold that i had a scarf covering my whole face. My knee is okay. But there is a bit of a bruise. It mostly just hurts if i touch it or go up and down stairs.

The laundry is finished with a few things remaining to be put away. Then I will chill out for a bit with the cats. They wear their earmuffs, mittens, and face masks, but I refuse to let them go out and play in the snow.

Olivia Newton-John was one of the Shark girls, with a short blond bob and a hot pink dress. There was a scene with no music or dialogue of Maria brushing her teeth. And for some reason two women were stomping grapes a la I Love Lucy. The theater stopped the movie in the middle of America to page a doctor in the audience, and it nearly caused a riot.

I forgot! I did see Daniels again on my second visit to A Little Night Music. I saw the original cast in September 1973 and Daniels replacing :en Cariou in March 1974. Sadly, Johns was out and we saw Barbara Lang, a beautiful actress, but she wasn't as good as Johns in the role.

William Daniels was as good, if not better, as Len Cariou. I think he brought out more of Egerman's neurotic edge.

I think I must have seen William Daniels in A Little Night Music, too, when I was in NYC for ALA in the summer of 1974.

I am glad your knee will be fine. I find sunglasses keep some of the cold away, and scarfs or winter face coverings out of my eyess.
