I spent the morning listening to the new Anyone Can Whistle. I followed the recording with my vocal score (actually, John McGlinn's score, signed by Sondheim and Lansbury), and it is not complete. There are missing snippets here and there, particularly in the Cookie Chase. The 6/8 section near the end is out. This section was one of the cuts Lieberson made in the LP of the Broadway cast - his edits were good - but the CD release of the original cast restored the cuts he made in the ballet, and may be more complete than the new recording.
I actually enjoyed quite a lot of the recording, and the performances have their moments. I wasn't crazy about Maria Friedman's voice when she began, but I actually liked her monologue and "There Won't Be Trumpets" more than I thought I would, and I liked her title song very much. Julia McKenzie is better than I thought from the track posted on Facebook, but I'm not sure I would have cast John Barrowman; he's fine, but Harry Guardino's rougher voice, particularly in "Everybody Says Don't," makes me want to hear a voice with more heft in the role.
