Topic of the Day: I've never made chili, other than to open a can and heat it up. My sister makes some pretty good vegan chili, but otherwise, I've only gotten it at restaurants on burgers or hot dogs, and that probably isn't the best kind of chili that there is.

Temperatures are in the 40s this week, so it's too warm in the apartment and I am not sleeping well. I had several strange dreams, but the last one was quite peculiar.

My mother's youngest brother Bob married right out of high school, around 1950. His wife, Allene Sullivan, told him she was pregnant, a lie, and he married her. From then on, until his divorce around 1963, she had an ongoing affair with one of the Lazarus brothers, who had several drycleaning businesses in Middletown. I remember Allene's mother fondly; she was a cook at Sherman School, where I went to kindergarten, and I used to see her when my class went to the cafeteria for a snack.

So I dreamed we were giving Mrs Sullivan a birthday party, and I haven't thought about her for years. The party locations seemed to shift from my mother's sister Lois' farmhouse near Columbus, Ohio, to the Miami University campus in Oxford, Ohio. Then I was riding a bus with my cousins and several of my mother's sistersm all dressed in white, and we couldn't get the bus to make its stop in Oxford. When it did stop, we had to walk some distance to a house I did not recognize, My mother and her oldest sister Dorothy were there, my mother dressed in white and Dorothy in yellow. My mother was angry because it was a white party for Dorothy's birthday, and my aunt kept protesting that she owned no white clothing.

Then my mother's sisters and sisters-in-law got into an argument about a white tablecloth. My Aunt Jenny, wife of my mother's brother Paul, wanted to use one of my cousin Tom's hospital gowns. He died from leukemia around 1995. Just before I woke, my mother wanted me to order a birthday cake from Middletown's Central Pastry.

Back to work on Oh, Boy! today. These orchestrations from Australia around 1920 are not very good. They're thin, oddly balanced, but then an interesting accompaniment or orchestra touch suddenly surprises me.

I got out the Big Ladder and played with the cat food. Stella apparently will eat most anything I give her, from guacamole to anything Fancy Feast. Annabelle and Thatch remain wishy washy about salmon but they love tuna and vanilla Haagen Dazs.

I had a terrible night, with a new backache showing at 2:46 in the a.m. It persisted through the night and the morning, and I've now found relief with some extra strength Tylenol.

There are endless varieties of chili, and I have loved many that I've tried over the years, at chili contests and elsewhere.

The only type I've made at home is an outgrowth of how my mother made it when we were kids, with ground beef as the meat component, and including beans. For my taste, steak or ground beef is completely satisfying, so I've left other of our animal friends out of the equation. I add veggies and chili peppers and season it like crazy, though, so it probably isn't REALLY like what I grew up with. But the style and general consistency are the same.

For hot dog style chili, you already know I use Hormel's without beans. When I was in the store last week picking up another couple of cans, I also decided to try another of theirs that's extra spicy and includes beans. I had checked out chili dogs on the web and found quite a few that include beans, and I like beans, so why not. I'll probably be getting around to that in the next few days.

I would like to thank DR TCB for the Kennedy Center Honors nomination......I will buy new socks to wear to the ceremony.

I am really surprised and pleased at the honor......I didn't even think I would ever be nominated for even the prestigious Jackson Family Honors.....

I liked my Mom's chili the best......so I just use her recipe when I make my own.

After reading DR TCB's suggestion of canned chili with NO BEANS for his chili dogs......I bought a can of said chili and will be making chili dogs probably Sunday or so.
