I wasn't intending to, but I just wrote two more pages - so seventeen total and about ten to fifteen to go.

I slept well until 3:00, when I had to get up for a bathroom break.  I had had a long dream about a job interview trip to a university outside Manhattan to teach in their musical theatre dept., and the class was in period performance styles.

After I got settled, Annabelle jumped down from her aerie to snuggle up and get warm, ands Stella kept romping on and off the bed.  My legs became quite restless, and I got little sleep from thr point on.

This morning I must make a post box trip and mail the six payments and other nonsense I forgot to mail on Friday when I was out and about.

I've got two sets of Mascagni Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. Although her voice is an acquired taste, Callas acts the shit out of most singers, and I consider her Tosca recording one of the greatest.  Here, she gets to do her light soprano Nedda in one and the heavier, she-wolf role of Santuzza in the other.  The Karajan set has Joan Carlyle in the commedia dell-arte tragedy, and I wish it were Mirella Freni and Fiorenza Cosotto as the rejected and bitter Santuzza.

T.O.D.

My first discovered music?

Aside from children's records which my folks bought for me when I was little, I think my first music was Broadway shows.

My mother used to buy LP's of Broadway shows (OKLAHOMA!, KISS ME, KATE, eta.)...and I got addicted.

When I was around 9-10, my folks took me to see the road company of OKLAHOMA!, which was playing in Seattle.

It was my 2nd road show.  The first was HARVEY with Joe E. Brown.  Saw it when I was 5-years-old.  Big disappointment that the rabbit never appeared on the stage.

I know it's not ask bk day, but reading today's notes, I'm wondering:

Have you ever had something you've watched or listened to during your listening/watching breaks while writing affect what you're writing?

TOD:

In my early teens, I listened to a lot of top-hit pop radio. The Carpenters were particular favorites.

But as early as 2, I used to sit ensconced in front of the living room speakers, listening to albums that my parents would put on. A lot of that was classical, but with a mix of show albums thrown in.

I agree with DR elmore3003:    bk should explore the operas of Benjamin Britten in his survey.

Monday morning greetings!  Richard has an eye exam today and, while I have to go along to drive him home, I’m not allowed inside the office.  What a weird world.

My father and his friends had a country & western band that played gigs at fire houses and parks and barns when I was little.....so we always went to those.  I sang a couple of songs when I was small - terrible sad songs about babies dying and kids being given away or left alone......

When I was five I heard my parents talking about James Dean dying in a car crash.  The only JD I knew was Jimmy Dean - and a couple of nights later he was on TV.  I was very confused.

About the same time Elvis Presley came along and I liked his music a lot.....and there was a song about a boy in black jeans or something who was killed  in a motorcycle crash that I always listened for on the radio.

After that - it was all Top Ten stuff until about age 8 when I found out that show music existed.

Something just reminded me of this:

Several days ago when BK was reporting on whichever Met opera he was watching, he said it was surprising to see the principals take bows after each act. That was the tradition at the Met for many years, and it seems like it was dropped in fairly recent times. Or maybe they still do it when they're using the house curtain? It is indeed odd to see it left on the home video releases when they could easily do a fade-out on the applause like they do on the nightly streams. But that's what it was:   Tradition!

TOD

The Sherman Bros., specifically by way of Mary Poppins. When I was 3, I saw the movie and learned the score, forward to back. My sister Annaliese taught me how to spell Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Picture a kid singing of carving his niche in the edifice of time and all that.

Then we got The Sound of Music soundtrack ...
