It's really strange.

Back from breakfast at Hugo's - pasta papa in the car. And here's the hilarity part: I've been doing the Hugo's breakfast in the car since November, when outdoor dining was canned. I eat in the car in their parking lot and in all those Saturdays there has not been ONE other person doing that. Until today. Today there were two. Guess I started another trend.

Michael Hordern is a perfect comic actor, and the silliness he finds himself in in Joseph Andrews is the best part of the movie. It could have been better, but it's a fun bit of escape. I haven't read the book since I was in grade school or high school when the movie came out back in 1976.

I think Ann-Margret's Lady Booby is also quite wonderful, too. I think the movie's problem might be that Tony Richardson seems more interested in the grime, bawdiness and lechery of 18th century England than the style and elegance that Tom Jones had. Maybe he needed John Osborne to write the screenplay?

A friend and I took a cruise to the Caribbean around NY 2000 to celebrate the millennium. We met and were chatting with a woman who had a relative who worked in intelligence for the US government. Her relative was very disturbed by the information they were getting, but could not reveal anything specific. He did tell her to stay put and not try to do any further travel. Even though this information was second-hand I found it very disturbing and didn't just dismiss it. September 11, 2001, of course, proved him correct.

As for Covid, I recall feeling quite nervous during the SARS epidemic in Asia in 2003. It felt very real to me and I was concerned that it might spread further. The epidemiologists have said for years a pandemic could occur. I wish Congress had listened. We never know when -- or if -- these things will occur, but my vote is to be prepared. When Covid started last March 80% of our PPE was coming from China, with whom we were having non-stop trade wars. To me that was shocking, a real vulnerability. To me the biggest surprise was just how very, very unprepared the US was.

I'm glad this is working out so well for you. You're placing the orders with your supermarket's website? Are you able to buy most of your groceries from just one store, whether in-store or online?

DR Jeanne, ordering through Amazon/Whole Foods. I would rather support a locally owned business; I get it. But as I am in several higher-risk comorbidity categories, I have to think about my own well-being more at the moment until I am able to access the vaccine.

I don't think you need to apologize for using WF. Many of us use them for some things that we can't get elsewhere. I can't get all my groceries from any one store, which complicates things, but I've been very happy with the personal shopper I use from time to time.

Once you get the vaccine, please continue to be cautious. No vaccine is 100% and it appears that even those who have been vaccinated can still spread the virus. The vaccine is just one piece of the puzzle.

I've also been reading account of a fellow that ate only potatoes for a year to break his food addiction. And that, other than a required B12 vitamin supplement, a number of credential doctors state that this is a healthy path. During this year, he suffered no ill effects; in fact quite the opposite.

Sounds crazy, no?

Yes, that we were so unprepared, or that the WH would consider it nothing, was the shock to me. I remember being pleased when Obama increased our precautions and missed the memo where Trump trashed them.
