THE SAP, THE COLE, AND THE PHOTOS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sappy, had some Cole, and had some photos, and now it is time for you to post until the sappy cows come home.

Great headshots, BK!  Are you going to update your HHW avatar to one of those?

And in your notes, what do you mean by, "...and the songs are, of course, diving."

Well, I must be off.  I have no plans today, so I'll probably just ketchup on some TV watching.

Have a good day, all!

Thanks for the Piazzolla link, DR John G.  It's really fun!  I heard a few refences to The Four Seasons. Couldn't tell you which movement(s).

This poem was written by poet Dana Gioia upon the death of his infant son from SIDS,
Out of pain can come great beauty,

Prayer
BY DANA GIOIA

Echo of the clocktower, footstep
in the alleyway, sweep
of the wind sifting the leaves.

Jeweller of the spiderweb, connoisseur
of autumn's opulence, blade of lightning
harvesting the sky.

Keeper of the small gate, choreographer
of entrances and exits, midnight
whisper traveling the wires.

Seducer, healer, deity or thief,
I will see you soon enough—
in the shadow of the rainfall,

in the brief violet darkening a sunset—
but until then I pray watch over him
as a mountain guards its covert ore

and the harsh falcon its flightless young.

I am very sad this morning to learn of the death of my friend, Karla Burns.  I met her in 1984, working on John McGlinn's "Songs of New York" recording. I had seen her earlier in the Houston Grand Opera production of Show Boat, for which she was nominated for a Tony. She didn't win, but she did win the Olivier Award in London for playing the same role in the Opera North production. Now, she and my friend Bruce Hubbard, her Joe in those productions, are together again. Before Bruce's death, we had talked about a pops concert act for the two of them as Paul Robeson and Hattie McDaniel.

I last saw her in Chicago, 2004, when I dragged her into a concert reading of Eubie Blake's show Tan Manhattan to do the comic soubrette role and sing several comedy numbers filled with double-entendre lyrics. She was brilliant.

She called me a couple of years ago and we talked for about an hour. I knew she was living in Wichita and performing there, and we swore we would worktogether again soon. I wish!

I have to sing in church tomorrow for my gig. It's supposed to be in the upper 90s, and the church is not air-conditioned. Pray for Rosemary's baby.

Here's Karla's recording of "Hey, Feller!" which was put back into the score for the Houston Grand Opera. Dhe was so wonderful!
