I know the feeling! My previous cat Ebonie went missing the very first day I moved in here!

Fortunately, she had just found a very small (but big enough) open area in between my kitchen sink cabinet and the dishwasher. When she finally came out from under it, it was quickly blocked so that she couldn't get back in.
