Just had some good news. I like good news and who wouldn't?

In addition to the soup, I bought some gefilte fish so I can feel like a Jew next week for the New Year. The best part is that one piece of it is only fifty calories - I had two and they were excellent and filling.

Composer Mikis Theodorakis has died at age 96.

Listening to music. The problem with this endless new back-up of the entire computer is that it slows everything down. I suspect it will be done by midnight.

Had dinner tonight at a place that specializes in farm to table food, which is good because it’s name is Farm to Table. Open only on Thursdays.

Had a series of wonderful dishes, from pan-roasted chicken to lamb meatballs.

My favorite was a tomato tart with perfect tomatoes and cheese in a tart shell. That could have been my meal.

For dessert, the staff was raving about the cherry sorbet and peach ice cream, which were very good.

But they couldn’t hold a candle to a dark chocolate tart with a filling of baked apples. It sounded iffy to me, but it was actually brilliant. The apples stole the show.

This all took place in the childhood home of Henry Wallace, an agricultural giant who served as one of FDR’s vice presidents. It’s been beautifully maintained, filled with antiques, many of which were actually owned by the Wallace family.

Afterwards, we went out for drnks at a trendy spot. The drinks were good and the crowd was diverse.

But it all made me feel old.

I guess not going to bars during the pandemic has had an effect on me.

Earlier in the day we went to the Des Moines Art Center, which had some beautiful works, including a large number of women artists.

There was a Grant Wood painting of Herbert Hoover’s home that I really liked.

Sadly the colors don’t pop the way they did in the gallery.

The work was mostly modern, and I was taken by a Basquiat. But they did have a Rodin sculpture and a Goya that were worth seeing up close.

Then we went shopping and I tasted Iowa wine for the first time.

It was not a pleasant experience.

Bill said the red reminded him of sauerkraut.

Had to have a local microbrew to wash my mouth out.

We also visited an Asian supermarket, which sold boneless duck feet.

I would have bought some, but I guess I left thst recipe back in San Antonio.
