The selectors rarely, if ever, read pre-pub books themselves when they're deciding on whether to purchase or not.  They read literary reviews (Kirkus, Publisher's Weekly, Library Journal, etc.) because those are much, Much, MUCH (that's three MUCHES) shorter than reading the entire book just to make a purchasing decision.

;D

I suppose that is why I am sometimes shocked the latest book in a popular series isn't purchased.  Or discrepancies, like the new Amor Towles, only one copy at the Pierce library while my local one purchased twelve copies.

It's pretty cool to see a book that's not going to be published for several months, and be able to read it before pretty much anyone else.

I would think so, only you didn't do it in this situation ;)

I was able to read The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest before it was released here.  My friend purchased it in England.  First her husband quickly read it, then she did the same, then I got to read it.  I was thrilled.

Last night I was tired from the running around all day, getting the two jabs, and partying it up at the cemetery. Came home, ate a comfort food pot pie, and called it an early night. I think I was zonked out by 10 pm.

Then, starting at 12:30 am, I began waking up almost every hour, thinking it must be almost morning... but except for one bathroom break at 2:30 am, I just rolled over (gingerly, very gingerly, on my two shot-up arms) and got right back to sleep. It was a good kind of exhaustion, and the sleep totaled about eight hours -- which is all too rare for me.

Only fatigue, that's great.  I hope you are feeling good today.

My uncle did come home yesterday, but he is going to have home nursing care - NOT HOSPICE - for awhile.

I am sorry.  I didn't realize he was that ill.  Vibes to your uncle.

Well I am going to test drive a Smart Car.  I looked at it today and have read up about it.

So if I like how it handles on Monday - I will be a Smart Car owner.  Photos will of course be posted.

Picked up Bountiful Baskets for the first time in many months. Got some fun things to play with, including artichokes, figs, red onions and plums.

The peaches are a little underripe. I do hope they ripen. Also, there are some tomatoes that are barely pink. I don't have much hope for them.

Starting to watch Honeysuckle Rose, which I have never seen. Willie's just a natural. I don't remember Dyan Cannon ever looking this good, even in Heaven Can Wait.

Apparently, Sutton Foster's London turn in Anything Goes has been filmed. No word on American showings.

As much as I love the score, I think Sutton's original cast album is far too bland. Could be the sound, which wasn't great. But it could also be Foster.

I did see Patti LuPone in it on an Easter Sunday afternoon. The crowd couldn't get enough of it, and it remains one of my all-time favorite afternoons in the theater.

Lasy night I watched a bootleg of the 1995 Chicago production of The Golden Apple, with a fine 28-piece orchestra. The cast is quite good, and they sing the rhythms that Jerome Moross wrote. It's far superior to the Dallas Lyric Stage production, which does have some good performances but the dreadful conductor really screws with Moross' writing and even makes cuts in the score. The Chicago production should have been the one to get the complete recording.

My Latin is in need of radical remediation.

I didn't realize (or remember) that the plural of opus is not opi, it is opera.

I told my boss yesterday that after my vacation at the end of the month, I still had three weeks left. I asked if I should take a day or two every week through the rest of the year. She said we’ll talk Wednesday.
