I will be heading out in a few minutes to the theater to rehearse with my "son" in our scenes together so he can get extra practice without the script. Poor guy has only been in the show a couple of weeks, is working two jobs and has almost no time to study lines, so he's very nervous. I don't mind driving there for him because he's been such a trouper about the entire show. (He just got his Anne the other night so he's got the choreography for "With Anne on My Arm" to learn, too.) And he's an excellent actor, SO much better than the originally cast youngster who was too young and inexperienced (but was a favorite of this often absent-music director).

I enjoyed DIE HARD 2 all over again. Such a fun action movie.

I put in THE BEST OF EVERYTHING and watched about 10 minutes of it. Those credits were a nice pinkish lavender shade, but so far I've found the Deluxe color just a slightly bit faded.

And it looks like we're about to have a thunderstorm which I'll luckily get to drive through to get to the rehearsal.  :(

Colleen Gray played Ty's wife in NIGHTMARE ALLEY, I believe.

Add DUMBO to my circus/carnival list, as well as FREAKS, YOU CAN'T CHEAT AN HONEST MAN with the inimitable W.C. Fields, and THE MARX BROS. AT THE CIRCUS.

And we all remember Elvis and Babs Stanwyck in ROUSTABOUT, don't we?

LADY IN THE DARK has its famous Circus sequence.

I remember liking a film called CARNY with Gary Busey, Jodie Foster, and singer/musician Robbie Robertson.  It had a score by Alex North.

I agree about Circus World. --That's the one with James Steward as the clown with the little dog? Right?

And he joined the circus because he had killed his wife who was really sick? Is that the one? My mom and I saw it on TV one time. I don't remember it so much.

And then there's Big Top Pee Wee. Can't forget that. A twister picks up a circus and it lands in Pee Wee Herman's backyard.

Ah yes, cucumbers. An ingredient of floop, and also the nickname of a girl in my fencing class, for some reason.

Vibes all around. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And Happy Birthday, Dear Reader Mr. Arnold M. Brockman!!

Back from a frustrating outing!  For reasons I cannot go into, I could not get into the office this morning, and the super of the building had no key to help me out and one of colleagues who does have the key wasn't around to answer his phone.  I ended up waiting an hour, which I billed for, until the realtors in the next office arrived at 10 and let me in.  Then, I was told there were two packages at the post office, but they could only find one.  I need to kick some ass physically and verbally as I type this.

How could I have forgotten FREAKS?  Does KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE count?  I love that film.

I am confused.  I have never heard of either song from CINDERELLA

Yes, that should have been "The Musical Adventures of Peter Pan," produced by our very own BK, NOT the aforementioned "Cinderella."

Danise and Sandra are thinking about the C.B. DeMille epic, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH with Stewart, Charlton Heston, Betty Hutton, Cornel Wilde, my old pal Henry Wilcoxon (who I got to know in the last years of his life), and many others.

Which, frankly, I think is a terrible picture...and, for my money, has the distinction of being the worst film to ever win an Oscar for best picture.  It beat out THE QUIET MAN, IVANHOE, MOULIN ROUGE, and HIGH NOON.  With the exception of THE QUIET MAN, admittedly not an exceptional year, but any one of them would have been better than the GREATEST SHOW...

Of course, the picture that should have won the Oscar that year wasn't even nominated...SINGING IN THE RAIN!

Don't worry, Sandra, my memory of CIRCUS WORLD is that it's almost as bad as THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH. To quote TIME: "To sit through this film is something like holding an elephant on your lap for two hours and fifteen minutes."  Bloated spectacle filmed in "Super Technirama", whatever the Hell that was.

CIRCUS WORLD was pretty fantastic to see in SUPER TECHNIRAMA....even though NOTHING happened of much worth.  John Wayne is okay, but I cannot understand a word Claudia Cardinale has looped in the whole movie.  I only have the P/S video, so it suffers a lot - and in fact I gave it to my brother and never got it back.  Rita Hayworth (!) plays John's girl friend.

I'm back from Bookfellows.  Too crowded for me, so I left quickly, after making a couple of purchases.

I have just had to have a rather loud and annoying conversation with someone - people who only know my nice side are always taken aback when I have to get strong.  And I had to get strong.  VERY strong.

DR CP is correct - that SINGIN' IN THE RAIN was not named Best Picture of 1952 is shocking.

Mr Cecil B. DeMille's picture THE TEN COMMANDMENTS is much more fun, and I would have chosen it over AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS - a few years later.

But then I don't care a LOT for AN AMERICAN IN PARIS - though it has its charms....compared to SINGIN' IN THE RAIN and its stars and songs and performances and story...well...RAIN is TOPS!

Obviously the ballet is what won Best Picture for AN AMERICAN IN PARIS. Otherwise, it's a no better than average MGM musical, pleasant, light, forgettable. Still, as much as I admire that ballet, the movie did not deserve Best Picture over STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE or A PLACE IN THE SUN.

Agree about GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, too. I certainly think it's the worst Best Picture in the Oscar lists. That was also the Oscar year of THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA, THE MEMBER OF THE WEDDING, THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT, THE LAVENDER HILL MOB, PAT AND MIKE, HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN, CARRIE, RASHOMON, and, as said earlier, SINGIN" IN THE RAIN, many of which were FAR more deserving of the Best Picture Oscar.

Back from rehearsal where we did some good work. Also got some one-on-one time with the costumer to know exactly what would be worn when. Most of my stuff is ready.
