So, DR ChasSmith, how about that Fantasticks last night? (I hear you ask)
Worst ever. At least, of those I've seen live. A total fail. A few of the actors had potential to be pretty good in their roles. But there was no direction. And the music direction (notably, the piano playing by the music director) was completely inept. Shockingly so. It might even take the prize for being the worst realization of the score ever.
But as I said I would, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Sadly, this was foreshadowed at the diner beforehand. The cheeseburger deluxe was way overcooked, and they don't know from cole slaw -- I could only get through two bites of the glop, and it was a huge serving. However, the bacon on the burger, the fries, and the coffee were all great.
So, a mixed evening. But it was still great to be out and about.
No harp. As expected. Thankfully, no bass or drums either. (I do not like the "orchestrated" versions.)
But seriously, no harpist could have played with that person.
But ChasSmith, did they add mothers?? I've seen two different productions by the same director/music director where he added mothers and split the fathers' lines between them.

ADD mothers, so that there were four parents? Or change the fathers to mothers?
This was just the standard book, with only Tom Jones' latest script tweaks. If you saw it done that way in the past, it might not have been sanctioned. But Tom only recently completed his gender switch version, and as far as I know, its premiere performance just happened within the past month or two.
