THE LAST OF STEVE
« on: November 27, 2021, 12:57:58 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of my close personal friend, Mr. Stephen Sondheim, and now it is time for you to post until the Sondheimian cows come home - they're currently singing their favorite Sondheim song, Send in the Cows.

Thanks for writing about your remembrances, BK.  It's always nice to learn about things from people who actually knew him.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (I played Hero)

Today, I have no plans...that I can remember...so I plan to do nothing, unless I hear otherwise. ::)

Have a good day, all!

I've been having strange nights of sleep lately, like going to bed at 9:00, sleeping soundly, walking up in what I think is the middle of the night and finding the clock says it's 12:04.

TOD:

I love it all. Truly. I believe I first became aware of the oeuvre of SJS when I discovered the cast album of Company in my parents collection of LPs and started listening to it obsessively. I was probably around 9 or 10.

My dislike for Passion and Into the Woods are very public, but I very much like "Giants in the Sky." Lately I've been loving the recording of the Lincoln Center production of The Frogs, which makes me laugh quite a lot.

I was lucky in my acting days to have played Erroneus in two different productions of A Funny Thing Happened . . . I think it's the absolute perfect musical comedy. In 1970, I purchased the cast recording of Company as soon as it was released and played it unceasingly until Follies arrived. I think Follies remains my favorite Sondheim show, for so many reasons, most of which the last revivals all miss: aging and physical decline set in a crumbling theatre, mental health, choices and opportunities missed, regrets, your feelings about your own "success" and how others see it. Added to that, crazy Sally Durant is the dramatic character that most closely resembles my own mother.

Thanks for the kind words.

I am perfectly fine....for an "orfalan".  That is a favorite word now.  Margaret O'Brien said it in one of her films...possibly "Journey for Margaret".

It is Saturday morning here in Johnston, South Carolina.

It's Fahrenheit 29 right now.  I am all toasty warm sitting at my computer.  I have been out of bed about 20 minutes and have not had my cup of coffee yet.

I may have left the work force in the summer of 2017, but I have not fully felt "retired" until now.  I seek new purpose.

I seek something to munch upon, with something hot to wash it down.

I have always enjoyed your stories about your trip home for the holidays.

I enjoyed writing them back in the day.  It was vastly different here from my life in Oakland.  Writing about it was my way of documenting that things happened the way they did.

Truthfully, I do miss California...a lot.  BUT...my retirement is so much more affordable here...and the living is easy (thank you, Ira Gershwin).

My goal for 2019 was to get a passport and to plan a trip or two.  But, alas...the pandemic waylaid that goal.  I aspire to travel more freely now if and when it feels safe to do so.  Have been reading some scary news about a mutation of COVID-19 that has popped up in South Africa that current vaccines have no effect upon.  Yikes.

Que sera sera, eh?

There is a glitch with today's notes.

If I exit, and then come back, yesterday's notes are the ones that are up.

I know there are notes for today because I have read them.

Try a manual refresh. I generally have to do that, too.

One More Kiss is a song I learned to love. Since it wasn’t on the original Follies, I didn’t learn it with the rest of the score or know its place in the tale. Now I love watching take after take on YouTube. Thrills me every time.
