My first thought was indeed West Side Story, or any of several other great ones from the 1950s-1960s. But for extraordinary historical purposes, I'm thinking I'd go along with that Gone With the Wind Atlanta premiere, or perhaps even Fantasia -- if, in fact, it had that kind of roadshow engagement. I'd have to look it up but I think it did, with the 40-channel "Fantasound" installations and all. I don't remember if that happened in more than one theater.

I'm reminded that there were roadshow engagements in the silent film era as well, with elaborate souvenir programs printed up like in later years. It's a rich heritage and I wish I could magically experience them all.

Thanks. For my part, it was early in and early out. I then went to "The Fresh Market" and bought some goodies like Thai noodle salad and smoked gouda salad.

At every part of my journey to and from Aiken, I had the unpleasant experience of cars riding my tail. They'd come out of nowhere doing 75 or 80.

I generally do 55 to 60 in a 55-mph zone. It is very unnerving when you see someone coming up behind you doing 75 or 80 and then slowing to ride less than a car length behnd you. I keep waiting for them to avail themselves of passing opportunities, but they don't seem to grasp that concept.

I also got behind a car at a 4-way stop regulated by a flashing red light. I could tell nothing was coming in left and right directions, but the car just sat there. I stopped behind him and gently tapped my horn. He didn't move. Two cars approached and stopped on our right. He just sat there. I finally laid on my horn and he slowly went through the intersection. My best guess is that the driver didn't understand that the flashing red light was never going to turn green.

And finally, in my last stretch toward home, a car got behind me -- again out of nowhere and I saw him speeding toward me -- but contented himself to ride directly behind me, never once availing himself of myriad passing opportunities.

It's really annoying.

I DESPISE tailgaters. I think that's one of the most dangerous driving practices of all. I really don't think anyone is taught good driving skills like we were. I learned in, what, the mid-1960s? -- and to this day I remember very specific things that were drilled into me, such as mentally gauging a safe distance behind the car in front of you, signaling every turn and lane change, and so much more.

And I don't see this as a typical old-person rant against the youth of the day. It's a skill that is taught and learned, or not, just like flying a plane (hello!). Unfortunately, people's attitudes in today's culture in general (NOT just the young) are such that this kind of thing is a losing - or already lost - battle.

i assume that we get to see the film in whatever high-quality condition in which it was designed to be seen. I would have to say, HOW THE WEST WAS WON. Although I am not a big western fan, I have always regretted not going up to Seattle to see this film in its true Cinerama form.

That would be an excellent alternate choice for me, too. I have never seen a Cinerama film in a Cinerama theater.
