I watched two versions of "Persuasion" last evening.  First up was the version with Sally Hawkins as Ann Elliot, Ruper Penry-Jones as Captain Wentworth and Anthony Head as Ann's foppish father.  This was from 2007 and is a really excellent film.

The second was from 1995 with Amanda Root as Ann Elliot, Ciaran Hinds as Captain Wentworth and Corin Redgrave as Ann's foppish father.

They are both excellent films, with terrific supporting casts and production values, but I believe I prefer the 2007 version. 

Amanda Root was excellent in The Forsyte Saga. I really enjoy her work. I have that Persuasion. May need to watch it again.

I found a nice carrying bag that I can use for CLUE.  Right now it just has my rehearsal schedule and some pencils in it, but after tonight it will have my SCRIPT as well.

I had a dream (or two?) that's haunting me. I was involved in some kind of musical gig, but the director had me playing in some position or other in a game of football, and I tried to convince the guy who actually should be playing that position to step up and do it. Don't ask. I can't even find a way to describe it to myself, let alone anyone else. It was one of those superbly annoying dreams that grabs hold and doesn't let you go.

Thursday morning greetings!  I'm enjoying a slow morning after having to be outta here before 9am yesterday.  Met up with 5 DAR friends for a field trip to Springfield, OH, and a nice lunch at First Watch on the way home.

Some excitement around here tonight. We had to huddle together in the church basement after choir rehearsal until the sirens stopped and the tornado warning had passed. Ironically, we were singing "Wizard of Oz" songs at the time.

I thought about you last night when a friend posted on FB that she was headed down to her basement.  I knew you were ok once I read her update.  I don't think she had as much fun as you did.

What shall I do with today?

Around noon-ish, my porch man will return to repair a panel of screen that blew loose in last week's storm.  That should not have happened if it had been done properly.

True but be glad he is addressing his mistake and not ignoring you.  Will he double check the other panels are secure?

Back from Shop Rite and Petco, measurably poorer.

Speaking of which, we haven't posted our gasoline price observations in quite a while. Well, it's pretty sickening here, and I know we're far from the worst. Following our first Putin-inspired increases which took the discount places (Costco & BJ's) up to about the four-dollar mark, the state implemented a three-month gas tax relief program which lowered prices across the board by approx. 25-cents per gallon. So, those $4 places instantly went down to $3.75. And then for a couple of weeks the prices fell further until we were at $3.61.

Fast-forward to a couple of weeks later when suddenly they began shooting up again, right up to the former $4.00 level and beyond. Today BJ's is at $4.19. Gee, um, thanks for the tax break Mr. Governor, sir.

Like I said, I know we ain't the worst. I'm scared to ask what it is in Southern California now.

I suddenly remembered one of my dreams last night. I was acting as a guide-company manager for The English Opera Group, minus Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears. We were all dsittign at a large roud table in a restaurant talking about Gilbert and sullivan and ordering dinner.

My neighbor Ann came by around 4:30, and we hjad a nice visit. Scaredy-cat Thatch has now gotten used to her, so he's no longer in hiding when she appears.

I am most curious about this new film of Persuasion, although I am concerned about what appears to be non-traditional casting in such a drama of early 19th century families.

I think I rember correctly two things:
Jane Austen did not title the book; it was done by her family when they submitted to a publisher after her death.


In Stella Gibbons' wonderful Cold Comfort Farm, Flora Poste would like to write a novel as perfect as Persuasion.
