Also, when Sammy was doing GOLDEN BOY on Broadway he and the entire company were under threats from the KKK and received constant bomb threats. All because he kissed the white female lead on the lips. That had never been done on stage before in America.

On stage one night, when he was still appearing in an act with his father and his godfather, he started doing imitations of Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney. And his father and godfather told him if he ever did that again he was out of the act. Blacks were never allowed to do imitations of white men.

They have a Facebook group for the cast/crew of AMiA, and I got an invitation to join, which I did, and then I promptly (or at least fairly shortly after) got three, count 'em, THREE Facebook Friends requests...except none of the three have anything to do with the play!
