I think the only grindhouse movies I ever saw were the Troma films like The Toxic Avenger.

Loved me some Troma. Surf Nazis Must Die, class of Nuke ‘Em High and the Toxie flicks.

I don't know from this genre of films, or the terminology.

I was possibly in a couple of grindhouse theaters during college years in Cleveland. On my earliest visits to NYC then, friends and I walked the 42nd Street block, marveling at the plethora of movie houses and sidewalk attractions, but we didn't go in to any of them. Also in those days, we were naïve enough to not even sense any danger or the true degradation of the area. It was just another big city adventure to walk among it all. I loved NYC and that was just part and parcel of it. I would also have just seen films like Midnight Cowboy and others depicting the area, and it would have been exciting for that reason, too. Sadly, I'm sorry I don't have any solid grindhouse experiences or memories to relate.

I walked from Grand Central to the Broadway district along 42nd street on my own at about 11 years old. This would have been in the mid 1970s.

I was slightly shocked by it all, but never felt in danger. Perhaps I should have.

In breaking news, the supermarket was selling Special Edition pretzels in the shape of footballs.

I did enjoy both film halves of Grindhouse, the movies that Quentin Tarrantino and Robert Rodriguez made.

Yes. Saw it at the theater. Great fun. There was even a halfway decent audience as I recall.

Sorry DR JOHN G I bought you nothing.

However I did find a box fan still in the box for $9.99 at Goodwill.  I had been looking for one to move the air around in the living room but new ones at WalMart were $38.88.....

And it works!  It is now blowing the air around in the living room as if it were born to the task.  LASKO.

From John:

Quote
I have made it 90% through Blood Meridian. Cormac McCarthy is a brilliant writer. His descriptions are poetic, the language is transporting. But, OMG, everything is so bleak. The violence is unsettling (as it’s supposed to be), the landscape is harsh and unforgiving. The only relief for some seems to come from alcohol. It’s sheer hell. No wonder I haven’t read him in more than 10 years. I don’t need to subject myself to it.

I have only read The Road, as I feared this would be the case.

I feel the same way about heat that DR Jeanne does.
I shut myself inside with the AC blasting.
When I lived in Arizona, I passed out on a regular basis. It was 115 degrees most of the summer.

Passing out is not good.  No wonder you moved.

I worked for an airline back then.
We actually had to close the Phoenix airport one day when temps hit 122 degrees.
There was concern over tires bursting when landing.
