Last night we watched two acts of the 2014 Metropolitan Opera's dreadful production of The Merry Widow, one of my favorite operettas. The direction was dreadful,v the costumes by William Ivey Long were surprisingly unattractive, and the two leads seemed over the hill. I liked Kelli O'Hara, but I thought she was not directed well. There were too many musical changes to suit me, with new dance arrangements for the director to show off her choreographic talents. Ms Fleming wasn't bad in the spoken dialogue, but I think I caught maybe one woird out of five in her sng lyrics.
