I read an interesting online exchange in a BookFace forum dedicated to the "Live in HD" transmissions from the Metropolitan Opera. Basically, they were complaining about the camera direction and how the intense focus on close-ups was to the detriment of establishing the geography of the stage and the overall stage picture. BK knows about this and has written about it, particularly in reference to the ballet, where it is even more crucial. Aside from missing the acting going on from the stage characters who are not singing at the moment, and the relationships, stage makeup is meant to be seen from the audience, and not in extreme HD closeup. In any case, an interesting discussion.

Today I must proofread the wonderful Tea Party from Dear World, one of my favorite Jerry Herman concoctions. The tunes that end up in counterpoint - Dickie for Gabrielle, Voices for constance, and Thoughts for Aurelia - work together beautifully. Technically, their not complicated since they have to be sung together, but Phil Lang's orchestrations give each song a different tone, so that the counterpoint is a really delightful coda to the sequence.

I watched Jeanne Dielman once -- actually, if truth be told (and it must, it must), I think I may have fast-forwarded here and there -- on the Criterion Blu-ray. Obviously, if I FF'ed, I wasn't getting the real experience, and I do intend to have another go at it sometime. Of course, the real experience would be viewing it with an audience at the Nuart, and I don't believe that will be happening any time soon.

I didn't love it, didn't hate it, and I do have an interest in, and patience for, that kind of thing in general. Though I do better with Rivette's long slow films. But I need to return to this one anyway, because my potato peeling at Thanksgiving was somehow lacking this last time, and I need the refresher course.
