I’ve now read Preview Harvey three times and I’ve enjoyed it for different reasons each time. The last, formatted and visually like it will be in print, made me remember the real thrill of being in a movie theater full of people who’d gathered to watch a movie.

In this covid era, I realize I’ve been twice to the movies, West Side Story and She Said. Both times, I was alone in the theater. Not like it used to be.

Both movies were financial flops, which also tells me that what I want to see is out of step with what’s popular these days.

Reading the movies discussed in Preview Harvey — titles like Charade, Chinatown and Breakfast at Tiffany’s — also remind me that movies used to be about people, not superpowers and CGI.

What DR John G. said about the book.

It's a wonderful evocation of the golden age of moviegoing for people in our general age bracket. Our parents and grandparents would call much earlier times their golden age. But this was it, baby. Hollywood was at its peak turning out its finest, as a rule, and as our hero discovers, even the less than finest product was worthwhile in some way.

It also documents the culture of moviegoing - especially for those living in L.A., but this really applies everywhere - in which movies - good movies - were part of the national dialogue. You could say that today's "product" is still that, for today's young people, but it isn't the same thing at all.

I have been told that my first moviegoing experience was when I was a babe in arms. I was less than 1 year old. I can’t remember if Mom said 6 weeks or 6 months. But I guess I felt at home because I behaved the whole way through. The movie was Lady and the Tramp.
