I have two newer translations. I haven’t auditioned them yet. One is Penguin.

The modern translation of Germinal made all the difference. But I was surprised. I have an old translation on Kindle that shies away from everything. Except a truly gruesome scene where the women of the town castrate a vile enemy and hoist his penis on a stick and parade it around —that was translated, albeit in somewhat nicer language. The newer translation, though, really made you taste the anger that spurred such an action.

A very insightful high school English teacher showed us how a translation gone awry can totally subvert the original intent of the author.

Well, I was right! I read the Penguin in Ohio sometime before 1979, and I read the older Oxford University Press - there's an evenm newer one - several years ago.

Tonight in a Playoff Game - the Timberwolves play the Lakers.

I do not think Mr Garza will play in any of the Playoff games, but time will tell.  It is on at approx. 10 p.m. EDST on TNT.
