John Malkovitch is coming to the Tobin in a show called The Music Critic. Sounds like fun:

Schumann fancies himself a “composer”, while Brahms is a “giftless bastard” and Claude Debussy is simply ugly. Aleksey Igudesman has created a sardonic mix of the most evil music critiques of the last centuries written about some of the greatest works of music. Equipped with a frivolous potpourri of musical insults, John Malkovich slips into the role of the evil critic who believes the music of Beethoven, Chopin, Prokofiev and the likes to be weary and dreary.

TOD:  Funny thing, Rodzinski.  In one of my commercial flights to an overseas duty station, I was listening to classical music with the headphones they gave me, and I heard The Three-Cornered Hat and enjoyed it a lot.  Before I could wonder who it was by, the announcer told me the title and the composer!

One of the great classical discoveries in my life was the music of Edward Elgar.  Like most people, I knew about Pomp and Circumstance and who wrote it (having played clarinet in band from 5th grade on).  When I saw "Young Winston" is the early 70s, I was struck by a piece of music that played as Winston and his mother were getting into a carriage following his father's funeral.  The piece was part of the Nimrod suite from "Enigma Variations" by Elgar.  Less than a year later, I was in London over Thanksgiving and found Sir John Barbirolli's recording of the piece.  I was hooked and remain so.

It is Monday, May 8th, in Johnston SC.

I trust it's the same where all y'all are!

Nothing important on my agenda for today.  I was hit hard by a head cold on Sunday, but I slept well last night and feel much better today.

The opening track of the new cast album of Sweeney Todd (with Josh Groban) has been released. It sounds pretty good.

I am seeing Seth Rudetsky on Thursday night, accompanying Andrea Burns in a Bernstein program.

Bernstein's daughter, Jaime, will also be on hand to autograph copies of her new book about her father.

I downloaded an Uber app.  To our surprise it was linked to Keith so he had to add me as a family member using his phone.  Oddly, I have never had an Uber app before.
