My people!

I am free!!!

Free!!!!!!!

After three months of whirlwind activity, I have nothing on my calendar for the next week and a half, except for attending a couple of things - starting with a Cabaret on Saturday evening that I know will be wholly enjoyable.

Kitty cleanup is finished. I am up-to-date on bills payments, I've send needed emails, and I need to make the bed.

My new cart and cat tree have arrived. I hope that Jen, who is much more mechnically adept and much more agile than I, has time to assemble them for me.

Like BK, I was at the Comedy Store exactly once. Mine was in 1987, with an out of town guest who had insisted on seeing Howie Mandel. At that time I only knew him from St. Elsewhere. I have no memory of anyone who might have appeared with him. He was quite the fidgeting spectacle to these eyes, but he was entertaining enough and his OCD and other issues were never any kind of a secret, even back then, as he was already making plenty of jokes about himself.

It’s funny, though (see what I did there??) — how, in spite of how much I love comedy, most stand-up wears out its welcome with me so quickly, and isn’t something I gravitate to. Other people can’t get enough of it.

No, wait, I was in another one of those places! Again, just once. What was the one on Melrose? The Improv? I went to a traffic school held there one weeknight.

You could do that once every so often to keep a ticket from going on your record, a very good deal. I’d been to one years before, and decided this time might as well be entertaining. And it was! I don’t remember if they had actual police officers who liked doing comedy, or if actual comedians were trained in the laws and did it, but it was truly funny. And yes, educational.

Listening to the demos of four songs from Adam Guettel's new Days of Wine and Roses:

Those are...interesting songs.  I definitely want to hear the rest of the score.  Thanks for sharing the link, Singdaw.

The PITA who joined the cast last week decided that he needed to occupy the director's complete attention last night for about twenty minutes clarifying his movements and motivations - while the rest of us stood around.

We are in the rehearsal center and so once we get onstage - most of the blocking will have to be modified....and of course three cast members were missing so it was not easy....but that's show business, I guess.

One of the main problems with using high school students in the cast or crew is that they have graduation rehearsal and sports schedules and other activities that interfere with the schedule.

The End.

There's not much to repor on the audition front, I'm sad to say. Turnout was still too low. I think I'm done having to show up for these, though if there should be another, hey, it's easy money. But I don't think they're fully cast yet. Looked to me like it's phone call time.

Three of the people who showed up last night were from my Carrie cast. Sadly, they were three of the less skilled ones. (Whew - let it not be forgotten how desperate we were then.) They could work out better for Pippin, very likely.

One truly non-capable person that no one knew showed up. To make some joke about it wouldn't even feel right. After her two song attempts, she got concise thank you's from the "table" that even I thought was a little abrupt. Ouch.

DR GEORGE's story reminds me:

Once I was directing and choreographing a production of BYE BYE BIRDIE....The schedule called for running Act One on Monday & Tuesday and Act Two on Wednesday and Thursday....and the show on Friday.

Act Two on Wednesday looked great - so all day at work I was thinking, since Act One needed more work...we would do Act One again on Thursday.

So I got to rehearsal and announced tonight we are doing Act One.  It was awful - worse than ever....I was crushed and didn't even give notes just sent everyone home.

I was complaining to my assistant director who finally said: "Well, Jack, everyone came in planning to do Act Two so that's what they were prepared for....Act One was sort of surprise....."

Since then, I always do what's on the schedule....I may add a scene or song or two at the end of the evening if we have time....but I don't surprise them anymore.
