Back in 1975, a friend and co-worker had a license, and invited me along on an hour-long sightseeing & practice flight he'd reserved a plane for at Santa Monica Airport. I'll have to check this, but as I recall, that was in the afternoon of Christmas Eve in 1975, a perfectly gorgeous day in Southern California. That ride was the greatest thrill, and I regaled him with questions on what it would take for me to learn how to fly. My parents were visiting from Ohio that week, and I'm afraid I talked their ears off about that flight the rest of the day. It took me another year before I finally had the chance to jump in, but I took the ground school and then the flying lessons starting in 1977, and a year later I had my piece of paper.

I was living over the hill in L.A., but I did all of this at Van Nuys Airport because the huge company I worked for had divisions in the Valley, and one of their many extracurricular benefits was a flying club through which I met the most wonderful people and private pilots.

Before I was to move and go through other everyday life changes that saw me eventually giving up the flying activities, I had decided that my very next "upgrade" would be to go out to some lake or wherever it was available and take lessons in a seaplane to get that rating added to my license. That didn't happen, but I had very much looked forward to it. Weirdly, though, to this day I have never been in a seaplane.

Sometimes I think organists and pilots have a lot in common.

I was walking up by Riverside Park once and people were gathered looking up at a tree, and I looked and there was that hawk not 15 feet up, on a branch, standing on one claw. With his other, he was eating a big rat like a it was a hot dog.

Well, I can't compete with Pale Male, but I just made a 3-egg ham, cheese and onion omelet that was beyond delicious.

It started yesterday when I picked up some deli "Virginia" (whatever that was ever supposed to mean) ham for sandwiches. It turned out to be of that cheap rubbery texture that I can't stand, so first I knew never to buy that again. Then I thought about what to do with the remaining half pound or so, and I decided to dice it up into very tiny pieces (which worked perfectly) and brown them in butter a little to get them warm and more flavorful. I had some finely grated cheddar and a little dollop of diced onion left over from something, and somehow, magic happened.

I can't actually flip the eggs, never learned that, but I spread 'em thin in a large skillet, and I have a very wide soft spatula that's great for sliding under the cooked side and lifting it to do the flip. Today's was perfect, probably my personal best. While side two cooked on the lowest heat, I added the cheese to get it melting, then the warm ham and the onion, and folded the whole thing over into a semi-circle. Somehow, my proportions were just perfect and the blend of flavors could not have been better.

I thought I'd posted a picture or two of me and one of the planes I flew back then.

In fact, I know I have.

But I knew this would have been long before DR Rodzinski made his historic return to HHW, so I had to mention that after this weekend's fun. I'll see if I can find the picture.

Suits me, 'cause I am one tired old dawg today.

Don't know why.  I slept like a log, but woke up and couldn't get comfortable enough in bed to fall back to sleep.

All the news this morning is Trump-centric and centered around weekend comments by Republicans for him and against him.

Severe storms are plaguing the southeast.

Fortunately, we are peripheral to them.  The skies are bright gray right now.

I am not sure what weather we will have today, other than "weather" of some sort or other.

I hope bad weather isn't a major obstacle for the rest of you.

I went to our country club yesterday to have Father's Day lunch with cousin Butch, his afianced Sharon and his son, Benjamin, who is 20 and a rising junior at Wofford College.

I got there early.  Hardly anyone there yet.  I sat in the lobby waiting for my lunch companions.  As the minutes passed, throngs of folks arrived and began lining up.  I began to wonder if my party would ever arrive.

And then Benjamin appeared and told me they had been there for a half hour and were in a different part of the club, and they had already been through the line and gotten their food.

I got in line, but it just wouldn't move.  I was there for about 15 minutes, and fiinally gave it up.  I went into the dining area and found my party and sat down.  They had been waiting for me and their food was getting cold.  I urged them to eat, please;  I wasn't hungry, I said.

Actually, I was a bit put out.  Butch and Sharon are NEVER early.  And I am always at the door waiting for them to help Butch into the club (he is ambulatory but needs assistance as he is not fully recovered from a stroke).

I didn't make an issue of it.  I apologized for not deciding to abandon the line earlier.  Actually, the lines aren't regulated by manners, IMO.  A man I was behind was suddenly five people ahead of me as people came up to them to speak and then joined them.  It occurred to me later that, as a member of a party already inside, I was "entitled' to break line and get my food so I could join them.   That always irks me, though...folks who are in line should get priority over those who come later.

All that negative karma aside, I had a good time talking with Sharon and Benjamin (Butch didn't talk much except to express his joy over Benjamin surprising him by being there).  I knew Benjamin would be with us, but it was to be a surprise.

Benjamin is a very personable, intelligent guy.  Very smart.  Always does well in school.  He might have gone to West Point, the Naval Academy or the Citadel had he not fallen in love with a girl who goes to Converse College.  Wofford is nearby and they are now living together.

I was a bit surprised that he ignored the scouts from the military schools which offered him a full ride.

His dad isn't able to completely fund his college tuition, but in consonance with his ex-wife and some scholarships, Benjamin is getting by.  He is also working transcribing medical prescriptions. It pays him very well...about $100 a day.

After the line had abated, I went through and got a to-go order, including dessert and take-away cup of tea.

Once home, I immediately joined my weekly Zoom chat.  I was half an hour late, but we had a good talk and wrapped things up around 3:30 p.m.

I then warmed up my lunch and it was terrific.
