Nope.  Yesterday was quite the day!

Yesterday, I volunteered for the Washington Center for the Performing Arts' fund raiser.

[George]

I got there at the call time of 3:45 p.m., and even paid for an hour and a half of street parking (parking is free after 5 p.m.).

[George]

When I got to the WCPA, not only was the regular check-in list not there, a front-of-house person wasn't there!

[George]

Someone finally told me that I was to go to the Olympian Hotel across the street and I'd get instructions there...no problem.

[George]

I get to the hotel (it was converted into shops years ago), go upstairs where the even is happening, and finally find someone who says that I and the other volunteer are basically there to serve drinks to the participants out in the sides of the lobby.

The event is for people who donated a lot of money to the Center, so in the ballroom, they'll have a dinner (and more drinks) and a live auction, and the presentations of a couple of awards and a general merry-making for the monied people.

Here's what I could see from where I was sitting:

We served drinks (wine, hard cider, lager, Coke, diet Coke, and a pre-mixed specialty drink created for this event) from about 4:15 until 6:45, when everyone moved from the ballroom to the WCPA black box for part two of their event.

[George]

I don't know what was happening in the black box, but once in the black box lobby, they all got another drink that they had prechosen when they bought their tickets.

[George]

These drinks were in special travel purple-colored travel cups with the name and date of the event...these were for them to keep.

[George]

Some of the patrons didn't want theirs, so us volunteers were able to keep the ones that were left behind (and there were quite a few left over after the concert, too!).

[George]

Once the patrons were done with whatever happened in the black box, the two of us who served drinks at the Olympian Hotel were free for the rest of the night.

I think I first really paid attention to Alan Arkin in THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING.....

Because I had volunteered for some part of the event, I could've just been able to get a stool at the back of the theater to watch the show, but fortunately, my friend Margo had gotten some tickets from her voucher for volunteering above 40 hours at the WCPA, and was able to get us and one of her daughters actual tickets to sit in comfy seats, so I didn't have to sit on a stool for the show!

The show was a Prince tribute band, and not only was the performer, Marshall Charloff, a dead ringer for Prince in the looks department, he could actually play multiple instruments and was really good!

One of his band members is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and another has recorded with some REALLY big names in the music world...they all have the chops!

I was never really a Prince fan, but I really enjoyed the concert.  They were all incredible musicians, and Marshall sang very well.

[George]

The crowd (which did include some people who were more tipsy than they should've been ) really enjoyed the concert, and so did I!

After the show, Marshall came out and signed his own CDs (I got the two that he was selling) and he autographed both.

Busy day catching up and I have a scheduled call with a friend at 2:00.
