In honor of Veteran’s Day, I made a small donation to VoteVets, an organization that strikes me as very pragmatic and effective.

One time after I’d lived in NY a couple years, I was walking in the east village and a girl is walking towards me and our eyes meet and our jaws dropped. She had lived in the apartment below me in Athens, GA during college. Boy, you couldn’t erase the smile off my face for the next day or so, it was such a fun little unexpected reunion.

Jane, I don’t expect my vision to improve more than it has from Thursday’s procedure. I wasn’t really sure I’d see much change. I’m pleased that it made a difference.

My “running into” story isn’t as fun as all of yours, but it was a surprise. Many years ago a friend and I wanted a break from work and drove up to Yosemite. Here we were, hiking, an 8-hour drive from LA, when who do I run into? A coworker whose office was only 20 feet from my own! And I wanted a break from work!

I'm glad your are satified with the results.  Have the side effects gone away?

The headache has gone, but there are still some new floaters. Not as many, though.

Jeanne, to answer your question from yesterday: I went to the University of Kentucky

First impressions of Here We Are:

The Sondheim Game is in full play. When a character criticizes the rest of the cast in song, it comes off as Henrick in A Weekend in the Country. Echoes of Putting It Together, A Little Priest, songs from Company, Follies and Bounce/Road Show, all in his voice. It’s not a derivative score, but there are welcome echoes of other works.

The lyrics may not be his best, but they are often fun, verbally dexterous, playful. Second tier Sondheim is still better than most people’s best.

The libretto is better than expected. The characters are fairly loathsome, but that makes them funnier. Most everyone is guilty of hypocrisy, superficiality, worthlessness, yet even in that, there are moments of truth and fleeting emotion underneath their paper-thin facades.

Of course, it helps to have people like David Hyde Pierce and Denis O’Hare on hand. Pierce has a great scene with Rachael Bay Jones and her fuzzy slippers that goes back and forth between laughs and insight. Would have liked to have seen Sondheim musicalize it.

I haven't dealt with the laser beams.  I have a couple of small floaters I rarely notice any more.

There’s also a scene where the music dies that addresses Sondheim’s death indirectly. I liked it.

Both Sondheim and Ives deal with Bunuel’s original films without being slavish to them.

I liked Ades’s opera version of Exterminating Angel. But I appreciated what Ives did with it in under an hour. That’s the second act. There isn’t a lot of Sondheim in that act, but there are a couple of effective songs.

It’s interesting that Edith Wharton’s unfinished The Buccaneers is now a big new series. Here We Are is also unfinished, but it’s fascinating if imperfect.

I was glad I went because I got to see DRs Vixmom and Ben, too, of course.
