I guess I fall somewhere between the majority of y’all and DR John G. when it comes to spicy food. I definitely like it, but not to extremes.
In Mexican food, a little jalapeńo is fine but I don’t want it overwhelming a dish, partly because I don’t love the flavor itself. A medium or medium-hot salsa or pico de gallo is ideal. In Chinese, I know to stay away from the little hot peppers. (Are those ghost peppers, or similar?) A touch of Chinese mustard is fine, but only a touch here and there. I don’t know a lot of Thai foods or even Indian foods, but I think I’ve been okay going with people’s suggestions and cautions.
I just read a couple of descriptions of ghost peppers, and I’m amazed that fast food places would even push them so nonchalantly. Based on this discussion, I wouldn’t even try that variety now. FYI, in this house, Kristi can tolerate little more than a taste of anything spicy, while Nathan would probably gobble up those ghost peppers and ask for more.
