I like spicy foods — a lot. I don’t like ghost peppers or spices on steroids.

I earned leather tongue status and had my picture on the wall of a now-defunct hot sauce business down in Port Aransas.

I used to order Thai food so hot the server would hold the sizzling dish at arm’s length.

I guess I fall somewhere between the majority of y’all and DR John G. when it comes to spicy food. I definitely like it, but not to extremes.

In Mexican food, a little jalapeńo is fine but I don’t want it overwhelming a dish, partly because I don’t love the flavor itself. A medium or medium-hot salsa or pico de gallo is ideal. In Chinese, I know to stay away from the little hot peppers. (Are those ghost peppers, or similar?) A touch of Chinese mustard is fine, but only a touch here and there. I don’t know a lot of Thai foods or even Indian foods, but I think I’ve been okay going with people’s suggestions and cautions.

I just read a couple of descriptions of ghost peppers, and I’m amazed that fast food places would even push them so nonchalantly. Based on this discussion, I wouldn’t even try that variety now. FYI, in this house, Kristi can tolerate little more than a taste of anything spicy, while Nathan would probably gobble up those ghost peppers and ask for more.

I just got a lovely message on Facebook from Frances Sternhagen's son Paul. He said that after too many years of dementia, the family was happy that she was free. My heart goes out to him and his brother Tony. They both inherited their mother's talent.

I went to see Scrooged on its first release and have remembered almost nothing about it since. I kind of recall being somewhat restless watching it. Maybe it deserves another chance? I’ve wondered that a few times over the years but have never made a move on it.

As for that Scrooge musical, I am heartened to find others who share my reaction to it. I’ve never been able to watch it, and I once subbed playing a rehearsal for one of those kids scenes that I believe put me off it for life. I even told one director of a would-be production that I actively disliked the couple of songs I was slightly familiar with. I always assumed I would be alone in this, but perhaps I’m not.

DR Elmore’s reaction and description are more generous than mine, but yes, that Oliver aspect kills it right off the bat for me.

TOD:

Put me in the same boat with our 42% British & Northern European DR singdaw.

I cannot eat spicy and avoid them with alacrity.

Sometimes even too much ONION in a dish sets me off.

And now for my Bear King news.

A friend's brother passed away and he has to go out of town, so his role that is scheduled to be filmed on Saturday - for the PBS series A Generation At War - has been offered to me.

I snapped it up.  It is a non speaking role in which I as the President of the Indiana Delegation react to the ramblings of A.C. Stevenson, whoever that is - although I know the actor playing him.

I do not think they had the EYEROLL in 1861, but we shall see what happens.

Three hours of filming on Saturday morning - just the two of US!  I may get a close up!

From DR Rodzinski:

Washington state enhanced drivers license gets us through the border. Doesn’t work at airports though.

Thanks.  I am glad it works as it should.  We have flown to Canada and used our passport but not driven there since getting the enhanced licenses.

Interestingly, my Ancestry DNA results confirm that I am genetically disposed to NOT liking spicy food.

My friend, thinking the dish had been made wrong took a taste and was shocked that it was indeed, in his words, “ not the least bit spicy”

That is why we never trust anyone, including our sons, to tell us food isn't spicy  ;D

The server, took one look at me, whisked the p,ate away and said it would be remade with NO spice…

I still couldn’t  bear it .

The heat was in your mouth.  You should have been given a milk based food to cut the heat.
