I think yesterday may rank as my all-time nadir of Christmases. I survived it.

Last night we watched the PBS broadcast from 1985 of the Arena Stage production of the Kurt Weill melodrama Happy End, in an English adaptation by my late friend Michael Feingold. The leading lady was my friend Marilyn Caskey. I saw the original 1985 PBS broadcast, but I hadn't seen it again until last night. It's 1917 Salvation Army-Chicago gangsters plot is much darker than Guys & Dolls, and its score closer to The Threepenny Opera than a Broadway musical, but the director Garland Wright's visual approach is silent film, with heavy eye makeup and completely un-PC racial stereotypes. The plot is rather flimsy, but the score - with the exuberant "Mandalay Song," the nostalgiac "BilbaoSong," and the haunting "Surabaya Johnny" - is nicely presented.

After two days of housecleaning, my legs are shot to hell. I plan to spend most of today lying down and taking it easy.

I'm exhausted, too, and I mostly sat around yesterday.

But it's been an extremely exhausting last couple of weeks.

Tomorrow is my pre-op check for the cataract surgery. Bloodwork, too, if I remember to fast late tonight and in the morn'.

And then I must prepare for a rehearsal on Friday, for a voice student recital/concert thingy I'm playing in a couple of weeks.

Must also remember to take the trash and recycling down to the road this evening.

I will be dropping in on New Year's Eve, but not here constantly. Pretty much like the last few years.  We'll be doing our annual zoom thing with the small group of friends who used to be regular par-tay guests in the Before Times.
