I first had hoppin' john in 1975 at actress Lee Purcell's house. I used to know what was in it - black beans, I think, or some kind of beans, ham, and that's all I remember.

Ninety minutes for all that. Accompaniment was/is the complete Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras - amazing, as always. Still an hour to go to finish that.
