After "True Detective: Night Country", I decided to give "Monsieur Spade" a shot (AMC+).

I like Clive Owen, but there were several things that put me off.  First, there is way too much reading needed by the viewer just to get the story started.  Short sentences stating and re-stating things (with minor adjustments) intended, I think, to amuse the viewer.  Je ne suis pas amusé!

Second, there seem to be about 15 or 20 "Executive Producers" you have to get through before the rest of the credits play out.  There are several times more producers than cast members.

And then the story starts off slowly.  Sam is retired in France, has charge of a little girl and is supposed to deliver her to her father.  No one wishes to cooperate.

I was in no mood....

I skipped Bible Study last night.  Didn't have the oomph needed to move from my chair.  I feel much better today, but now I worry that I may have missed some essential something about Satan and demons that tonight's final class will not help me recover.

Sigh.

I need coffee.

It is 24 degrees outside right now.  Our projected high is 42.

Sunny skies prevail.

We're practically going to maybe have a possible heat wave.

A non-tropical, arctic-infused heat wave.

If the temperature's not rising

It will be most surprising if

I empty my trash can!

Last night I decided to give Broadway HD on Amazon Prime a try. I watched the first act of Noel Coward's Private Lives from the Chichester Festival with Toby Stephens, son of Maggie Smith, and Anna Chancellor, who played Caroline Bingley in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice. I found them way too artificial and brittle. I don't think I'll watch the rest of it.

Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens (Toby's parents) did this play in London in 1972-73,  I spent Thanksgiving 1973 in London, but arrived a day or two after the show had closed.  I was devastated. "The Mousetrap" was sold out.  I had to content myself by going to the Dominion Theater to see that new compilation film known as "That's Entertainment"!

Coward's play is on the brittle side, I think, and requires some elegant playing to resonate with an audience.   Smith and Stephens likely did that with ease.   Smith later toured with it in the US in 1974, but with a different actor as she and Stephens had divorced.

It's not ideal, but the casting of that production was swell-egant!

I'd be curious (maybe it's been discussed here before) how you or BK or anyone here feel or did feel about what seemed to be a lot of narration in the movie "Barbie."

It felt in "Barbie" like a lot of telling rather than showing, but seems to suggest if the movie is working for its (large) audience, audiences don't mind the telling rather than showing all that much.

Of course, in "Barbie" the narration is by Helen Mirren, so that may be a factor.

But it seemed to suggest that. telling but not showing is something that doesn't work - unless it's done well enough that it works.

My sister Paula is coming for a short visit in a bit.

I have made some hot dogs - in case she has time to eat.  Her husband wants to use the car instead of his pick up truck - so she can't stay long.

Last night, I treated myself to a new series:  "True Detective, Night Country" starring Jodie Foster.

It promises to be quite something.  I enjoyed the first episode a lot, although I have some reservations about where it might go.  But, until it actually gets there, I'm going to keep watching.

Where is it? HBO, I believe? I'm hearing a wide range of opinions on it, some negative but enough positive - or at least hopeful - and it sounds like it's right up my alley. I'll have to ketchup on that first episode and give it a fair shake (not stir).

Yesterday this woman on Facebook kept insisting there was a major earthquake in 1974 calling as if the Sylmar and the San Fernando quakes were separate and in separate years. Except for the name of the 1974 earthquake her information was exactly the same as the Northridge quake in 1994.

My response:
The Sylmar earthquake aka the San Fernando was on Feb 9, 1971. I don't know of a major earthquake in 1974, only the Northridge one on January 17, 1994.

Her response:
Tomorrow is the anniversary of the Northridge Quake but posts are calling the San Fernando Quake and the Sylmar Quake the same quake. I am going to post a video of the Northridge Quake 1-17-74 4:30 am 6.7 quake.

FINALLY, someone got through to her this morning and she stands corrected  ::)

I really think if there had been a major earthquake in 1974 that Keith & I would remember it.
