Five years ago today was a Saturday, and I attended a New York City Animal Care Center adoption event. I wanted a dog although I did worry how Annabelle and Thatch would like that. The adoption event was on Amsterdam, halfway up the block between 82nd and 83rd Streets, next to my current barber, at a long-gone pet supplies store.

There was only one dog at the event, a beautiful dog who smelled A & T on my clothes and did not particularly like cats. Also, he weighed over 50 lbs, and that's far too big for my apartment. So, I went into the trailer to look at the cats.

I discovered a 3-month-old black and white tuxedo kitten named Pinot Noir. She was adorable, and I decided to adopt her instead. As soon as I got her home, I went online and changed her name to Stella. This was her photo on the NYC Animal Care and Control adoption site.

"Watch your cravings erupt before your eyes" combined with the photo sounds (and looks) not-so-vaguely euphemistic - I wonder if that was their intent in phrasing it that way?

The aurora was incredible last night, and apparently seen as far south as Florida which is practically unheard of. We're surrounded by trees, but I could totally appreciate how light the sky was, and the green and pink/purple tints were wonderful. And in spite of the sky being light, you could see stars and planets galore. A rare night.
