Oh my goodness, Elmore I am so sorry about your fall.

Larry, do you have one of those Medic Alert contraptions?  If not, might it be covered by your insurance?

An interesting Sondheim memory in Vegas was seeing, as part of the show "Jubilee" at Bally's, "Beautiful Girls" and "All I Need is the Girl" performed in a very much adult manner by the showgirls.

Also interesting was seeing Siegfried and Roy and noticing in the program that the staging was by Broadway notables John Caird and John Napier.

I've been to Vegas only half a dozen times, or thereabouts.

But let's see. Two of those were stopovers on car trips driving to LA in the early 70s, then once when driving to Chicago in the mid-80s. Another time (or two?) was friends and I going there from LA just to do it, and we saw Don Rickles at the Riviera one of those times. One time was a pilot friend and me hopping over there in a Cessna, just a day trip, and I think we just ate lunch in a casino and flew right back. The last two times were when our company was participating in trade shows, so we got to live high on the hog (or is it off?) those times, and we saw the Siegfried & Roy show - which didn't interest me, but it was entertaining enough at the time.

Okay, that adds up to seven times and I'm still not certain that's accurate. Anyhoo, it was always fun and always mindboggling, but I'd never deliberately plan a trip there nowadays. And invariably, the things that attracted me were the reminders of "old Vegas" as opposed to the big corporate thing it is now.

Very concerning, Elmore. To not be able to count on your knees is surely terrifying.

That SNL sketch seemed to be a hybrid of the Dunaway clip and this Lauren Bacall coffee commercial.  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NtUyGTwy6dY&pp=ygUfbGF1cmVuIGJhY2FsbCBoaWdoIHBvaW50IGNvZmZlZQ%3D%3D

There was one road trip in 1971 with friends, from San Francisco back to Cleveland, in which we stopped for just an hour or so as we passed through Reno. I'm thinking we filled the tanks and grabbed a bite to eat. Other than that, everything I know about Reno I've learned from Reno 911!.

DR Elmore, was it your knee or the hip that the doctors said should be the priority when it comes to joint replacements? It would be so wonderful - indeed, life-changing - if that could finally get going.

Back from the market. I bought Cretan cheeses, meats, mushroom pie, other things to snack on instead of a meal.

TOD: We stayed in Vegas on a cross-country trip when I was about 8 years old. We stayed at Caesars Palace which was then brand new. My main memory is throwing up in the lobby of the Sands hotel, now long gone.

As an adult I only went for a couple of tech trade shows at my first job. At the last trade show, Boston's airport was snowed in so I had to stay either an extra night in Vegas, or in Dallas where I had my connection. I chose Dallas and got some excellent barbecue. Haven't been back in over 30 years.

Nothing was broken, and it was not a serious fall like last week, but I'm frightened. This is my second fall because of leg-knee issues, and there's no way to control them or know at what point it will happen. I worry that it will happen while I'm crossing the street, creeping down stairs. Some day, one of these falls could be lethal.

Oh, no!

Oh yeah, places stayed.

My only overnights were the Don Rickles trip (and/or another trip I was thinking happened in the early '70s) and we were doing it in the style of poor students, staying in a motel just off the strip. The only other stays I had were the biz trips - we first stayed in what might have still been called the International (?) - the one off the strip next to the convention center - and on the next trip we were at the Mirage.

And you know what I most loved about each of those humongous places? The ground floor amenities - the real coffee shops like you probably don't get much of nowadays, the casual restaurants, the nice Mexican restaurant in the first place (that was sadly gone when I looked there later), the buffets, the bars and casino areas that were just really interesting to hang out in. That kind of community area. Food was always great, and they just felt comfortable and fun to be around. The rooms were okay, but are just to sleep in, no nostalgia involved there.

I liked the volcano at the Mirage. (Big deal, right?) It may or may not still be there, or planned to be there in the future, I know they're changing a lot of stuff.

We miss former dear reader Sandra, daughter of current dear reader Laura. Perhaps they can stop in LA and see their close personal friend, Jason Graae, in the May 22 Kritzerland show.
