The woman at the desk was very apologetic and helped us find a new hotel only three blocks away ( the short way)

So we trudged over to the new hotel carrying all the luggage

When we arrive the desk clerk there explained he couldn’t allow us access because the account she used to online book the room was in her husbands name and his ID must be presented to release the room

Husband is a long distance trucker currently working in the far northwest wilds of Canada

Fortunately niece was able to reach husband and he emailed a copy of his ID to the hotel clerk

Niece had remained calm but was getting quite teary eyed with all the stress of the hotel accommodations going sideways

Desk clerk handed over the key and apologized for the trouble ( niece had also explained about snafu at previous hotel which is part of the same chain)

He mentioned that he had upgraded the room and home she would be comfortable

They had been upgraded to a family suite , 2 king beds, a bunk bed, a kitchenette, a dining table and huge bathroom.

Then we all walked a couple of blocks back towards the car and stopped at a lovely little pub where we had dinner

Then they walked me back to my car and we all hugged and said our goodbyes and I headed home

The trip home was relatively uneventful except for the bumper to bumper traffic, which I found unusual heading east on a Sunday night

Turns out there had been a major accident at the Queens/Nassau border involving a tractor trailer and two or three cars.

Three of four lanes were closed down with all sorts of emergency vehicles and police and EMTs working hard
