Having groaned my way through the last batch of DR slingjaw's posts, I bid you all a good morning.

Happy Saturday!

TOD:

I hope it's not too sad for me to say that I have no great vacation memories.  As a child, my parents certainly took me to the beach or to the mountains, and that was always fun but nothing memorable remains with me about those trips.

I will say, however, that I have had very memorable excursions, especially when I lived in Europe.  Trips to London, Switzerland, Turkey and Greece, plus weekend visits to Florene, Rome, Venice, Capri, Sorrento all register as strong, warm memories.

TOD Redux:

Also during my Navy years, I had wonderful visits to Hong Kong, Singapore, Perth, and to Kenya.

It might not be too much of a stretch to say that my Navy career was a 23 1/2 year vacation, often interrupted by work, but it took me to places I never thought I would see.

I think my favorite vacations were work-related, either the 2001 and 2002 trips to London to record with John McGlinn - although he himself was no vacation during this period - or my three August trips to Dublin, 2011, 2012, and 2013. Because the 2012 conductor was impossible, it was the worst of the three trips, but hanging out with the cast, crew, and orchestra on breaks and after the sessions was the absolute best. I miss them.

And a wonderful trip to Hong Kong and China in the late 70s when China was just opening up to tourism.

I just saw a flyer in the elevator - someone in our building is organizing a "Silent Book Club."

Apparently everyone comes together in a communal space and reads silently for half an hour or so. And then each person shares something about what they've been reading.
