I agree with Seth Rudetsky that there should be separate directing awards for revivals versus new productions.

The director's job is completely different bringing a new work to the stage (collaborating with the writers).

That certainly makes a lot of sense.

Best Actress winner should have time deducted from her speech for digging through her purse to try to find her acceptance speech.

I'm watching a Richard Linklater movie called Everybody Wants Some!!  It's ostensibly about college guys wanting to get laid, as the title suggests. But it's also a musical of sorts in that the guys go to a ton of bars, dancing until they find someone to have sex with. The music is nonstop. It's interesting.

Richard Linklater is directing a film version of Merrily We Roll Along that will be filmed over 20 years, so that the actors will REALLY age during the film.

Which means how many of us will be alive to see it? I wish Greta Gerwig had gotten the director gig for that.

It was from the scene in Lady Bird where the director of the high school production of Merrily says "They didn't understand it." But now he has a smile on his face and says "They understood it." (The meme works better, I'll look for it again.)

How can they give you best book and best score but not best musical?

It's not the first time.  Into the Woods won best book and score, but Phantom of the Opera won best musical.
