In other news, the auditions are OVER, thank the lord.

Practically everything about these two sessions fell somewhere between awkward and hideous. This was a classic community theeder turnout. Absolutely classic. I'd be tempted to put it right up there with Waiting for Guffman, but I wouldn't want to insult the movie.

This director is good, there's a good support system at this place, and I'm sure he'll whip the show (The Spitfire Grill) into shape. He's both directing and music directing, and he might call me in at some point to play a few rehearsals while he concentrates on the directing side, and that'll be fine. But oh man, the parade of humanity that passed through...

That's too bad.  I love that show!

So here we are, at Day One of our heat wave. In a couple of hours I will start some A/C.

I'm spending most of the day indoors and working on some musical stuff.

Damned IRS assholes! According to the IRS Refund page, I'm getting a refund on Thursday. The amount given is  $49 less than the return requested.

So, in today's mail, I got a letter from the IRS, dated last Friday, in which I'm told m,y return will be delayed for possibly sixty days while I am investigated for IRS fraud. Seriously.

WTF?

NOOOOO!!!!!! :o

The ghoulish auction of Sondheim stuff is now. And it is as hilariously horrifying as can be imagined. I have no idea who the bidders are either in person or online, although most seems to not be online. Things valued at $300 tops are going for thousands of dollars - things people wouldn't even give a second glance to - but they were owned by "the master." I've never seen anything like this.

I wondered about the values that were assigned.  Watching Antiques Roadshow, they say that a lot of value can be increased just because a particular person owned it. :-\

Starting bid 200 - first competing bid 2K - those are absentee or phone bids by people whose tops are those figures - no one and I mean no one is getting anything for a reasonable cost here. Even in huge celebrity auctions there are deals to be had and those auctions there are tons of dealers bidding in the mix. I don't know a single dealer who'd be in this mix. This is all crazy Sondheads, most of whom, I'm guessing, are the members of various Sondheim Facebook groups.

There were several things with reasonable assigned values that I would've loved to have, but I knew that they would not sell at those values.

A Faberge gilt silver box in the shape of a pool table just went for - high estimate was 18K - went for 55K and an 11K Buyer's Premium. Who HAS that kind of money.

Not I!

I would have purchased a hard copy of the auction catalog, but it doesn't appear that they created one.
Or if they did, it was not made publicly available.

That's too bad.

It's too bad SOME of the Sondheim stuff couldn't have been kept together to create a museum or some permanent display, but I guess it's all about the almighty dollar.

I suspect the things going to the Library of Congress were settled before the things to be auctioned went to Doyles.

That makes sense.  They probably got the best picks and the rest was sold off.

OH. MY. GOD.

I'm watching the bidding now. Just came in at:

GYPSY vocal score, (the paperbound) inscribed to SS by Jule Styne, estimated $800-$1200, sold for $11,000.

Yikes!

But I know someone who won something:  Lot 235, pair of Victorian armchairs, estimated at $500-$700, won for $900 - and he and a buddy are splitting it and taking one each.

That's really cool.  Congrats to them!

I’m supposed to have my MRI tomorrow. I just got the paperwork that it has not been approved. The doctor is supposed to call the insurance company and there’s a possibility it could be covered, but I don’t hold out hope that the doctor’s office will work that quickly.

Oh, my goodness!!  What's the matter with them??

More information at the link about the MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG revival being filmed

Great news - thanks for sharing! I thought the Hamilton film was really well done.

I agree!  I really enjoyed Hamilton.  I wonder if they were the same company that filmed Bandstand.  I loved that show!

This Sondheim auction is beyond belief. Everything, no matter how trivial or stupid, is going for thousands of dollars. Some ninny paid 35K for the gold record of West Side Story's soundtrack - high estimate was 1500, which is about right. 35K PLUS buyer's premium and tax. That is some kind of stupid. Where people get this kind of money is anyone's guess. Signed musical quote went for 25K - do you know how many Sondheim musical quotes I've had for various silent auctions? They all sold at great prices, the most expensive of which was about 4K.
I treasure the Sondheim autograph I bought in one of your auctions.

I think I got a letter from Sondheim to BK, but I can't remember where it may be.  I DO know that I got a couple of pages of music that Sondheim had marked up for BK's recordings. :)

I was also able to buy from P.S. Classics' website an autographed copy of the Encores production of Merrily.  Sondheim, Jonathan Tunic AND Lin-Manuel Miranda (before he wrote Hamilton) autographed it, as well as several others.

And I believe until a couple years ago a regular visitor to the Giants clubhouse, where he would set up in long-time clubhouse manager Mike Murphy's office. Can you imagine current Giants players getting to hang around Willie Mays?
