I had a very nice - and very rare - night of sleep. The cats behaved, but I think part of the reason was the arrival of a new Amazon carton yesterday, and their desire to snuggle inside it. Poor Stella, because her coat is a longer and heavier fur, feels the heat worse thamn Annabelle or Thatch, so I'm sure she was delighted to curl up in the carton next to the AC.

This morning, I have my second and final Zoom with the New York Independent Assessor Program. Unlike Tuesday's 2.5 hour interview, this will only be one hour.

DR John G, I had never heard of Claudia Gray before your post. Around 1998, there was a rush of Jane Austen mysteries. I tried a couple, including P.D. James' Death Comes to Pemberly. I found none of the authors caught Austen's tone as an author and, outside of naming the charactersElizabeth, Darcy, Miss Lucas, or whomever, they could have been named Nick, Nora, Mike Hammer, Poirot, etc.

How dio you feel Miss Gray does?

There was a wonderful series of Victorian mysteries that ran downhill as the author continued writing them. I finally gave up when I felt her sense of history and small things, like the time it would take in getting around London in a horse and carriage, were completely wacko.

Last night, because of DR John G, for the first time since summer 1972, I watched Alfred Hitchcock's wonderful Frenzy. As soon as the credits began, I was back in a Pittsburgh movie theatre in late June, 1972, where I saw the film with my friend George Brashears. I saw it again several months later in Middletown, when I moved back to my parents' home to hide out and lick my wounds after a disastrous teaching experience at a Pennsylvania college. I remembered bits of the film 50 years later, like the wonderfully comic scenes with Alec McCowen and Vivien Merchant, but I'd forgotten how unsettling the rape-murder of Barbara Leigh-Hunt was. After so many years of watching BBC programs, I was surprised to see Jean Marsh, Billie Whitelaw, and Bernard Cribbins.

DR John G, did you recognize Hyacinth Bucket's (pronounced Bouquet's) husband Richard?

I was also gobsmacked to see the screenplay was by Anthony Shaffer. The things you learn!

BK, thanks for the Robert Williams report. What a disgusting example of human behavior. I've lost several eBay items through one of two things: theft in the building and incompetent US postal deliveries to the wrong address, but I've never blamed the seller or fought for Paypal reimbursement since neither was to blame. The big problem is the US Postal Service does shit to locate misdirected things, and all opne can do is eat the cost of the purchase.

I think Robert Williams’ behavior was abysmal.

I must get rolling as I must fill my gas tank, drive to Cutchogue and conduct a closing and perhaps , if time permits, make a side trip to Flanders to see The Big Duck
