Topic of the Day: a year or two after I graduated from college, I went back to my high school and saw their production of a show called Quilters that a young (at the time) friend was in, and it was fantastic! If I remember correctly, the show only had five women (young women in this production, of course) and they were all very good. I was blown away by how good the show was, and well they all pulled it off.

I did not sleep well at all last night, although the cats took pity on me and behaved. Thatch and Annabelle slept beside me, but my bladder, along with the usual cramps, leg and joint pains refused to let me sleep. Some time after midnight, I finally dozed off.

I really enjoyed The Tempest last night. The last time I saw it live, the Prospero could not remember a single one of his many monologues, so it was rather painful.

While I was working at The Drama Book Shop, my friend Joseph Weiss, who sadly died this year, recommended me - because he was such a fan of my Jubilee work - to Don Pippin to orchestrate the Nymph Errant concert he was planning. Jubilee was written in 1935, and Nymph Errant was 1934. Well, I had a lovely phone call from Don Pippin, I thought I had the job, and he told me that he was off to London to finalize plans and that he would call when he returned. Well, he didn't. That concert and CD were scored by the wonderful Jim Tyler, who had orchestrated La Cage aux Folles for Pippin. I don't believe I ever spoke to Don after that.

Before the show. I said to myself, I don't care if it's a woman playing the role, just let the actor know the lines. Well, it was a Prospero, and she was great.

The king was transformed into a queen. The Ariel was a nonbinary sprite. The setting was fairly modern day. The Caliban was a monster with a giant snail shell n his back.

BK, it's almost 25 years of "Rock Island" with drums. For all I know, Doug Besterman and David Chase are to blame for the revival with Rebecca Luker and Craig Bierko.

It was a fairly humorous production with some touching moments at the end. And I liked the way the director made you realize that Ariel and Caliban both desire to be free, but they go about it in very different ways.

My friend Carol worked wardrobe for that production. She loved Luker.

Your work was missed. I love the recording, but it sometimes sounds a little too modern.

When I was in high school, I thought the productions were spectacular, but in retrospect I dount they came close to being that good. In 1969 or 70, I saw a Springfield, Ohio, high school production of Flower Drum Song that was positively amazing. The cast was good, and the orchestra really excellent. I also remember seeing around 1975 a Middletown summer high school production of No No Nanette that was equally good.

Around 15 years ago, I saw goddaughter Charlotte in the Horace Mann School's production of A Funnyt Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, which I was dreading, but duty calls. To my surprise, it was wonderful: there were no cuts to the text, so it was bawdy and very funny. The school hires Broadway musicians, so the band was also excellent.

I'm stunned to hear that, DR Elmore. I truly thought it was a thing only done at high schools, maybe community theeders, and only in the more misguided - or cast-challenged - productions. My first exposure to it was a HS production I played in 2016, and - get this - even the pit drummer was deficient. (That one was far, far from a shining example of high school shows.)
