Made it to the airport very early. There’s nothing to do but stand in line at Starbucks.

I got to the airport in clear weather. While checking my bag, the skies apparently opened in a huge downpour.

I had lunch with Louis Lane around 2002 in Wooster, Ohio, during a trip to the Ohio Light Opera. I cannot remember now if the lunch was just me, Louis Lane. and our host, James Stuart, the founder and director iof the Ohio Light Opera, or if Brece Pomahac was also there. Louis Lane had conducted one or two concerts with the OLO orchestra during the summer for several seasons.

Mr Lane was then in his early 70s and seemed older and rather fragile. I found him happy to talk about himself, but he seemed very effete, extremely snobbish, and completely uninterested in me, which made me wonder why he agreed to join us for lunch. I was happy to meet him because I, liker BK, had several of his recordings through the Columvia Record Club.

BK, JD Vance is from my hometown. His claim to fame was his "autobiography," Hillbilly Elegy which was made into a Ron Howard film starring Amy Adams as Vance's whorish drug-addicted mother. He was essentially raised by his grandmother, who was, like my dad's mother, from the Appalchian area of Kentucky.

I say "autobiography," because I have no idea how much of it is true. Vance wants his readers to know that he was a wounded child, rescued by a good fairy grandmother, who like Oliver Twist pulled himself out of the moire, survived law school, and became the American Dream.

Who was that inept singer who croaked and screamed through the National Anthem? She seemed to me the metaphor for the complete white trailer trash of the current Rethuglican party.

This was posted yesterday: Oklahoma native Mary Millben to sing the national anthem at Republican National Convention.

I have never heard of her.

It wouldn't be the first time they've selected someone for the National Anthem who literally didn't know how to sing.

Perhaps I shall have my personal chef whip up some corn fritters.

Louis Lane was still assistant conductor when I got to Cleveland. I know I heard him conduct in those years, but can't remember what - it wasn't pops stuff, so maybe filling in for Szell, or maybe it was a rehearsal. At one point a bunch of us drove down to Akron where he was the conductor of their symphony orchestra, to hear a concert performance of Fidelio. We were going to be doing it that season or the next with Levine, so there was a chance to hear it live. Oddly, I remember nothing about it, just that I was there. But Lane was a solid fixture in northeastern Ohio then. There has to be something else I'm forgetting.

That's interesting about the lunch with him, DR Elmore, and about how he seemed to come off personally. My funny memory is thinking that in certain publicity photographs he reminded me of Joseph Cotten.
