Around 1981 film director John Schlesinger staged Offenbach's wonderful Les Contes d'Hoffmann for Placido Domingo and the Royal Opera. The DVD is probably my favorite  staging of the opera. I do love the Michael Powell film, but it cuts about a quarter of the score. Both the Schlessinger staging and the film catchg more of the gothic and tragic qualities than any other staging I've seen live or on video.

So, around 2016, the Royal Opera restaged the production, and last night I watched the new DVD. The cast is good, although Thomas Hampson, a singer I really like, doesn't really have the low notes for the evil genius and his disguises. I thought the singer playing Olympia, the mechanical doll, was sloppy in her coloratura but she acted the role well. The Antonia, Sonya Yoncheva, was superb. Vittorio Grigolo and Kate Lindsey, as Hoffmann and Nicklausse, were fantastic.

The 1981 staging used the traditional 1904 score published by Choudens with Raoul Gunsbourg's "finalization" of the Venice act. Sin  ce the second half, more of Offenbach's opriginal scores from 1880 have turned up, and this new Royal Opera included some music I had nevere heard before, like the Violin aria for Nicklausse in the Antonia act.

I'm not a red meat person except for ground beef in pasta sauce or other foodstuffs. I do love ham, but my heart belon gs to chicken and seafoods.

One positive is that in waiting until after the RNC, those clowns wasted all their hot air and unchecked media time on Joe.

Could that have been intentional?

I guess George just asked that.  I'll try to find some of those videos where they discuss that question.

Monday morning greetings!  It’s  rainy and gloomy here today - perfect for welcoming a certain vice-presidential candidate for his “homecoming” rally  :P

TOD:  My favorite beef dish from restaurants recently has been the Sloppy Joe from Schnipper's in Times Square (consistently a classy and tasty concoction despite the name)

On a fast food level, would the McRib count as a meat dish?

Ladies and gentlemen, it's Monday.

I fervently hope it won't turn out to be "a Monday". Just Monday will do, thanks.

Should be a nice day here again, with a high of around 83.

Starting tonight, there's rain coming for the next couple of days. But we're "looking at" a nice clear weekend after that. Which I hope does come to pass, for the sake of the outdoor theeder which opens Grease on Friday. But they could have a rough go of it during their tech week.

Slept well. Dreamt I was assigned to write about a family getting a Habitat for Humanity house. Instead of a traditional family, they were all philharmonic musicians.

I also like Brazilian steakhouses where men bearing skewers of meat seem to dance around you.

TOD;

I have several favorite beef cuts -- rib eye, N.Y. Strip, porterhouse and filet mignon.  Not that I, a retiree, can any longer afford weekly treats of them, but they have been lifelong favorites.

I also love veggies, like fresh tomatoes, squash, crowder peas, corn and such.  I love all manner of greens, including collard, turnip and mustard.  Spinach is wonderful.

I love great casseroles of squash, broccoli, corn-and-tomato, etc.  Lots of veggies with cheese and onions.  I adore onions cooked and, sometimes, raw.

I love my veggies too. But I am surprised that I don’t miss spinach, which is absurdly high in oxalic acid and perhaps the No. 1 cause of kidney stones in me. BTW, I don’t miss the kidney stones either.

I’m rolling over a retirement account and it has taken an unbelievably long period of time (more than 3 months). Hopefully it gets resolved this week.

Does anyone know the pianist Paul Wee? I got a recording of two piano concertos from the library and am really enjoying it. He plays Hanselt and Bronsart with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra.
