When I retired from the Navy on 12/31/93, i drove up to Oakland CA from San Diego CA.

I shared a really nice apartment with an old friend for a couple of years.  I do not recall ever getting so warm in summer that I wished we had A/C.  At that time, Oakland was always cool enough in evenings for a jacket or sweater no matter what time of year it was.  A "hot" day was in the low 80s, and it never seemed to be the norm.

When I moved into my own condo in 1995, the weather was much the same in the Bay Area.  I had a window fan in my bedroom, and that was all I ever needed.

However, as the years moved on, we had more and more really warm days.  It got to a point where I had to go to Sears and buy an a/c window unit.   Bay Area houses and apartments simply did not have air conditioning.  They had fireplaces, though, which would often be lit in the evenings on cool summer nights.

By the time I retired a second time, there were no oool summer nights. I had a/c units in living and bed rooms.  And I used them daily during the summer.

Here in SC, there is no point in NOT having a/c.  I set my thermostat in winter and summer and the HVAC system maintains consistent temperatures for me in the house.  There is only a brief period in spring and fall when the system does not come on at all.

TOD:

For Jack -- I kept meaning to ask what "PP" meant in some of your posts.  I must have missed the title of the play.  What does "PP" stand for?

Congrats on millstones and whatever else has been going on.

I am delinquent because I woke up yesterday with what has proved to be the worst case of diverticulitis I've had. I'm used to getting a little flare-up once a year or so, but yesterday's was more intense. I had a couple of degrees of fever so I called my "primary" who advised me to go to an urgent-care center (since they had not one minute in which to see me yesterday), and if I couldn't get in, just go to an ER. Fortunately the urgent care could see me, and they explained that the reason the doc would have wanted me to be seen today is the fever. But if you keep having the pains or the fever, you do have to go to the ER and get an abdominal cat-scan and bloodwork which will tell us for sure what the problem is. By then I was feeling much better and she said okay, you get option 1, which is an antibiotic, and see if that starts to improve things. I got Cipro for my first time, and boy is it strong but I don't care. I'm on it for seven days.

From Grazie:

Not only does the Ice Cream Diet exist, but it also works.

This dietary regimen, acclaimed as the best summer weight-loss diet, was devised by Pietro Migliaccio, a nutritionist and President of the Italian Society of Nutrition.

Obviously, despite its name, it doesn’t promise weight loss in exchange for binges of ice cream in front of the TV. However, it does allow for consuming one or two ice creams a day and still losing weight. Which isn’t bad at all.

The doctor there told me that they often don't even treat diverticulitis unless it really gets bad, because it's so common that people tend to "get used to having a flare-up" now and then and have usually figured out what to eat or drink in the meantime that works for them.

It got very bad for me. I hope your case is much less severe.
